| Cottage Cheese & Osteo form Hi, im new. my female may be about 10 days pregnant if everything went right with her "boyfriend". I was wondering, i know i can feed her cottage cheese at times throughout her pregnancy but is it ok to give it to her now? & if so how often? Also- I was told to feed her osteo form... but when is it ok to start giving it to her? Would osteo form be the pill considered as the multi-vitamin? If not what multi-vitamin should i give her? Any & all advice would be helpful, I want to make sure I feed her all the right things. |

| I give mine about 1/3 C. of fat free cottage cheese in their last week of pregnancy. You have to be careful with giving her too much fat so the puppies don't get too big. Especially during the last 2 weeks of pregnancy.

| <-- Thanks for the bump! She loves cottage cheese, shes been eating it since she was about 3months old. I am feeding her Yorkshire Eukanuba, but was thinking of changing her to Wellness & then I guess Wellness puppy, would that be good enough? I thought the osteo- form was good during pregnancy b/c thats what the vet gave her mom while she was preggy. So when do I give her the osteo- form? Would Cal-Sorb/Nutri cal be the multi-vitamins? I know nutri cal is to give to her in case of hypoglycemia, or am I wrong? When should I start the Yogurt & hard boiled eggs, or should I switch btwn the 3? All the advice will be helpful, alot to take in for the 1st time. Thanks. Last edited by YorkieFanatic98; 07-04-2009 at 11:39 AM. |

| You don't want to use any calcium supplements while they are pregnant. Calcium rich foods are absorbed by the body different than supplements. That's why it's good to give food with calcium vs. a supplement. You don't want her body to quit making it's own calcium. Plus, you have to make sure that she's getting the proper amount of Vit. D to absorb the calcium. Sunlight is an excellent source of Vit. D. I personally don't like Eukanuba. She would do much better on the Wellness puppy. I also don't supplement with any other foods other than their kibble until the last week of their pregnancy. As I said before, you don't want the puppies to get too fat, which could result in a difficult whelp. Cal-sorb is used during whelping if her labor stalls. Or it's used if she gets eclamptic on you. It's definitely a good product to keep on hand. Not necessarily something you will have to use, but definitely good to keep.

| Fannie... awesome! Thanks a million. I have her on eukanuba now.. & will change her to the wellness puppy when the 5th week comes around. What other supplement would you give her on the last week of the pregnancy? I am gettin most of this info from a website that has a pregnancy timeline & gives the advice about when to feed this or that. Which is the best multi-vitamin as well? I went to Revival & they have alot of good things that I am sure to order within the next couple days. |

| There's no need to wait to change her food. I'd do it now. Just do it gradually so it's not an abrupt switch. As I said, I don't give supplements. No vitamins, etc. They get what they need from a high quality food. Until the last week when I give some cottage cheese. Eggs are good too. I have a girl due any minute and she's not wanting to eat her kibble well. So she's getting a scrambled egg in the morning mixed with some canned puppy food and some cottage cheese (fat free) at night mixed with some canned puppy food. I don't start giving anything extra to eat until the last week. And you have to be careful with that so it's not too much fat.

| I have been raising Yorkies for over 12 years. I feel that it is important to not over supplement. If your females is eating well then just a good all stages of life dog food is all the pregnant momma needs. Some people will switch the momma to a puppy food the last two weeks of her pregnancy. Since I feed an 'all stages' dog food I don't find that necessary. It is thought by many that giving the momma a calcium supplement prior to her delivering puppies will make her more prone to getting eclampsia after the puppies are born. Eclampsia can be deadly for the momma if not treated immediately. That is why it is very important to keep the Cal-sorb on hand. Please read up on eclampsia in dogs: Eclampsia (Puerperal Tetany, Milk Fever, Hypocalcemia) in Dogs Some females can get eclampsia prior to having puppies so you have to be prepared in case that occurs. I have never had a female get pre-eclampsia. Osteo-Form is a chewable calcium-phosporus supplement for dogs. I am not going to say not to give it, I am just saying what I do. It is another one of those controversial subjects. I feel that once the momma has her babies the most important thing is to make sure the momma eats about 4 good meals a day, the last meal being right before bedtime. Over supplementing a pregnant female can cause birth defects as can feeding them a poor diet. Here is a interesting article that explains some of those issues: Birth Defects in Dogs. |

You have been given some GREAT advice so far and I am also soaking in all of the information. I had my first litter of yorkies almost 2 years ago, & even though I've learned so much since then, I keep reading everything I can to learn even more. Good luck to you and I hope you stay around as her pregnancy progresses.
