| Lick, lick, lick, lick... I know y'all can't be any more bored with my tail-licking mama stories than I am! But, have any of you heard of a dog that licks so much? She has stopped licking their tails now that they're healed, but when they're nursing, she doesn't stop licking them. I know she does it to stimulate them, and for other instinctual reasons, but for Pete's sake - enough is enough! She keeps interrupting their nursing, and knocking them down off her with all the licking. When I distract her from them, she licks her foot, the towel, me, etc.! We have hard floors in our house, but our closet has carpeting, and when I get out of the shower, I find her in there just going to town licking the carpet! I got her when she was 13 weeks, but I'm wondering if she was weaned too early, or if there's just no reason for her being so 'licky.' Don't get me wrong, it doesn't usually bother me, and I usually think it's cute, but poor pups don't have much rest from it. Last edited by tammys; 06-30-2009 at 06:33 AM. |

| My Daisy is a licker! We also have hardwood floors and all she does is walk around with her head down licking! We call her our little vacuum. She just had her first liter Friday and I was worried she wouldn't stop licking the babies but after the first couple days she slowed down on the licking. |

| Your post made me laugh. I too want to know what all the licking is about. Whenever I brush Mimi, she'll lick anything in reach, but she prefers human skin. When her pups had their tails docked, she licked one of the pup's tail too much & it caused poor blood circulation & I had to put bitter apple on their stumps as advised by our vet. But that didn't stop her.

| I was following your post, poor little babies! I just had our babies tails docked yesterday and I was worried we would have the same issue. But she did just fine. |

Cassie pulled out stitches, then glue, then made them bleed until we took her out of the box! We had to bring her to the babies in order to nurse, and then it had to be supervised. We had to do the stimulating until the tails completely healed. Maybe some dogs are just that way - weird! I used to think she was giving me kisses, until I saw her licking everything that wouldn't move! Actually, I guess she licks things that move too! Whatever! LOL

I'm so glad she did fine. Apparently, only mine and Mimimomo's mamas do that! I hope their tails heal quickly.

| Tammy - is she usually like that or is this unusual behavior? I'm asking because I read something the other day about dog licking unusual things - I think it's called pica and it can happen when your anemic. I was anemic after both of my pregnancies and I wonder if that can happen to a dog as well. They said liver was good to give a dog who was anemic. Hey - it's worth a try. Becareful not to give too much liver though as it can cause canon butt. |

tjdmom~ Anemia, will that come out in blood panels? She's had numerous tests & the acid bile test as well & she's all good.

Yes, she always, always, always has done this, so I don't think that could be it. Thanks for thinking about it. If only she could talk. LOL

Unbelievable! I had never heard of this before; neither had our vet. They are 17 days old today, and I have slept next to their box since they were born. The first few days, I worried that she would lay on them (which she has done), and after that I had the tail reason. The tails are better now, but she still lays on them. I am waiting for them to get big enough to tell her to get off them!

| I've never heard of pica, but good to know! I use Lixotinic after a C-section to build up the blood in case of anemia. Might work for that too. |
