| Two more puppy issues... I swear if it's not one thing, it's another. Problem 1: Cassie removed her little girl's tail stitches, so the vet glued it the next day. Last night she removed all the glue, and now it's all raw and bleeding bit. The vet said it will heal on its own, but she will have a scar (couldn't care less about that). I have put some Betadine on it. My plan is to remove the girl from her mom and brother (the lower weight one) and bring her to nurse every two hours, day and night. I will have to do the cleaning, b/c if Cassie does it, she will lick her tail. Does that sound like a good plan? Problem 2: Both babies have a tiny bit of nasal drainage, and have sneezed a few times. The vet said to just watch them. I was at Petsmart and spoke to a girl who works there (knowing very well that they don't always know that much). But, she breeds poodles, and said it sounds like a upper respiratory infection. When I asked how in the world they would have gotten that, she said probably from temp. changes. Stupid heating pad with auto shut off! Also, we do have a ceiling fan in the same room they are in, and she said to turn that off. I know infections come from germs, but could it be that the runny noses and sneezing could be from the temp. changes? Thanks so much for your advice! |

| Oh Definately keep the fan off in that room and make sure the room stays fairly warm. As for removing your little girl, I am not sure if that is how I would handle that. How is your boy doing? Has he gained yet?

Please share any ideas you have. That poor little nub hurts just to look at it, and I don't know how to keep her mom from hurting it any further. Yes!! He went up .4 oz today. The vet said she would be happy if he went up .3/day.

| I think the pups would be better off with momma unless the tail is really bleeding. The mom is licking it to make it heal. I have never had any of my momma do that. I don't know about the runny nose, hopefully that will clear up and not develop into anything serious. |

Yea, the vet said she had never seen it either, but Cassie is a crazy licker. She licks everything she can: towels, the floor, sofa (yuck), my comfortor (yuck, again!), etc. For some reason she didn't want the stitches or the glue there. LOL I have heard that the clamp and twist (that sounds awful) way of docking tails makes it easier for the tails to heal. Too bad it wasn't done that way.

| I would keep putting the betadine on it to keep it from getting infected and I do believe it helps it to dry up faster as well.

| I just saw the last baby from my second litter go to her new home! Puppies want NO Draft, and their bed/room needs to be 80-90 degrees. What I do is tape up the vent in the room so no AC can go in there, then I put towels under the door so nothing can get in that way. This second liter I used a heat lamp instead of pad (I put it over half the bed, then mom and they can move away if they get too hot) and I think it works better. I bought a thermometer and laid it in the bed with them and whenever I checked on them I made sure it was in the right temp range. Mine would have little droplets of liquid on their noses and sneeze a bit - if they are eating, gaining etc a sneeze here and there I wouldn't worry so much. You could take their temps if you are really concerned (can't remember what the correct temp for that age is, but you could find it online) As for the tail - I wouldn't worry so much - mom licking may help it heal - if isn't bleeding and doesn't look infected I wouldn't worry. If you do take baby out, before and after you let it nurse you can hold it up to the mom to "potty" it so that you don't have to. |

Awww, I'm sure she went to a wonderful home, since you obviously love your babies. I have been checking the temp in their box and it has been 90-ish. The draft from the fan was a big no-no. It wasn't on top of them, but it was in the room, so it is now off. You're description of the tiny droplets is exactly what I'm seeing. I realize it's no guarantee, but you have made me feel tons better! I cannot describe the tail except for that it looks red and raw, with less hair every time mama gets to it. (I cringed as I typed that). She tucks her tail under when both her mom or I try to help her go potty. She's either really shy, or it really hurts. I bet that has a lot to do with the redness...it gets licked when her mom is trying to get her to go poop b/c it's so short, and that area is so close to her tail. Hmmm, Believe me, letting her stay with her mama is way easier for me, so I would love to, but I worry about what it will look like tomorrow. I might just give it one more night and see how it goes. That and the fact that I checked on them tonight, and the mom had rolled over and was on her way to sleep, but I couldn't find the little boy. I quickly picked up mom to find the little one squashed under there. My husband said, and I quote, "I would never leave her alone with those puppies for a second." LOL Coming from Mr. Practical, I was fairly surprised! He likes to crawl under her, and I'm sure he was on his way when she rolled over on him. Thank so much for you experience and advice.
