| To all you responsible breeders... What are the most important pre-exams to all breeders out there? Any other extra exams to be on the safe side? Thanks.

| hmmm not one yet, but I am researching and think that as many medical tests that you can afford that will be able to tell you whether your Yorky is healthy and likely to pass on those healthy traits to future pups. I understand that one of the vet schools in Kentucky is doing research on finding the genes that pass on liver shunt and some other bad prolblems. One day we'll be able to test a dog's DNA to see whether he or she will pass Liver Shunt genes to their pups. Then folks will know to not breed that dog no matter how wonderful it is. Just spay or neuter and enjoy and love! I know I would test for Liver Shunt, luxating patellas, Legg Perthes, collapsing trachea, heart and eye problems. A lot of testing. My vet said it would cost me more than $300 just to test for all of those except heart and eye problems!!!!! No wonder the good pups cost so much!!! |
