Question How much should stud fee's be?

How much are you supposed to charge for a stud fee? Just a random question.

The price greatly depends on the quality of the dog , his ancestors , if he is a champion or not .

It can run from $400.00 and more

I was just wondering bc I obviously had no clue. A couple people have explained to me that you can charge the price that you paid for your male in the first place. Since that was his value at purchase any number of his offspring should be sold for the same or more so that price isn't considered outrageous once you consider the number of puppies born and their quality. But if someone were to do that I would think that they should wait until the puppies are born to determine the amount to be paid. Bc personally I wouldn't want to pay for a stud upfront then have my bitch not have any pups. I don't know personally it just makes more sense from both stand points to wait for the litter to arrive to reach that decision. Is that a bad idea?

In our area, it's $500 or pick of the litter. Most people will just pay the $500 out right. I have received that fee when I stud my male out. Pick of the litter is high and frankly, most people don't want to do it since the stud breeder will normally take a female as pick.

I am going to use a different stud the next time Gracie comes in. This breeder does pick of the litter and I'm willing to pay it cause I really want a dog of that look/quality.

I would not pay after the litter is whelped. That to me sounds strange and doesn't quite seem right. But, it could work for some. I'd rather pay/receive a flat rate.

Also, you should have a contract in writing stating the stud fees. I would not use an unproven stud. Use a stud that you know has produced litters. Also, in that contract, it should state that there is a chance that pups may not be produced. Protect yourself in whichever you decide to do.

Best of luck to you!

My "mentor" used a stud and only one puppy was produced, years ago. This breeder told her that because there was only one puppy it wasn't considered a litter. I think that was based on the idea that if the breeder wanted pick of the litter then my "mentor's" female would have done all the work and my "mentor" would have nothing to show for it. She was told for it to be considered a litter there must be at least 2 puppies, also if only one puppy survives it is not considered a litter. If there was only one puppy there would be a second breeding for free. Now to be honest I think my "mentor" is a little whacky. Cause she makes it sound like if you pay a stud fee and only get one puppy that the studs owner should still give another breeding for free. My "mentor" says she lives by this creed. If my Autumn only produces one puppy and I have paid for a stud fee(I am), we will see what she says then cause I am breeding my female to my "mentor's" stud. It sounds like a good plan if you want pick of the litter, but not so good if you take a fee. Sylvia

Yea, I guess I kinda understand that position. But I'm not looking for a pick of the litter. (Still not sure whether or not I'm deciding to breed Harley- still have a lot of tests and vet appt.'s before I make that decision) I'm not taking pick of the litter bc the reason the couple wants to breed w/ me is bc they plan on giving the puppy/puppies to their granddaughters. So I wouldn't even have an option on a pick. And besides when I go to purchase a female later in the future I'm going to save, save, save and save some more and buy the best of the best!lol Thanks for the tips!

Oh yea! This is random and off topic.. I'm sorry! But my bf's bulldog Lulu just had an xray yesterday and she's going to have 1 puppy and she's having her c-section this friday afternoon! I'm soooo excited! Put her and her puppy in your prayers please!!! Thanks!!!

Most stud contracts guarantee a litter which is usually defined as two live puppies. If no litter results from a breeding, a free repeat service is usually offered. We usually pay half at the time of breeding and half when the litter is whelped.

Giving puppies for the stud fee gets complicated. Who gets to pick? What if stud dog owner wants a female and there are only males whelped. What if the stud dog owner can't make up his/her mind until the puppies are 12 weeks old. They will almost always want the same puppy you do.

Cash makes everything much simpler.

Ok, how about I go get Harley's sperm analyzed by the vet to find out if his 'swimmers' are A-ok and are capable of producing? See, I know that almost everyone has said not to use a newbie bitch w/ a newbie stud but I would think it would be alright on my part if I had my vet check on his 'swimmers' and if she said they were ok and the bitch produced no puppies we could be sure the proble wasn't w/ my male. Even if he checked out to be ok and they bred but she produced no puppies (and I got paid anyway) I am certain that I would still give them a freebie anyway. But maybe that's just me.

So is it wrong or right to charge the amount you paid for your male as the stud fee?

in the Northwest stud fee ranges from $350-$650 depending on pedigree

stud fee is based on a litter of more than one, and repeat breeding is no charge if no or one puppy results. Here the fees are paid up front with signed contract.

That's one way to go. Whatever you decide, you need to put down the terms and conditions in writing. I just recently researched this topic and there are all kinds of stud service contracts on the web with all different kinds of conditions.

Traditionally stud fee equals the price of a puppy, so I don't think it would be wrong! Depends on what you want from the breeding.

WOW who are you studding with thats charging the cost of a puppy. I can get a 90% red pedigree, AKC champion for $650 and under from a couple breeders in Portland.

I've visited your website and don't see AKC champion sired puppies.
