5 lb. mama versus 10 lb. daddy HELP! My 2 1/2 yr old almost 5 lb. yorkie Tia and I visited my mother and totally unexpected and within 5 min. after arriving she and Tanner who is 1 yr. and 10 lbs. were together. I called the vet thinking that surely she would need to stop the pregnancy, but was told that though I have heard all sorts of horror stories that this probably wouldn't be a problem and most turned out just fine and to wait and they would do an xray later, etc... Then I got really excited! Now she is about 6 1/2 weeks along, and in the last week is getting big! But the more I read and research the more and more afraid I am getting!!! I suppose there is nothing more to do now than wait and see and prepare for anything, but still if anything happened to her it would be horrible! I have been told that the mother determines the size not the male? Just hoping for some input on my fears and any advice anyone thinks might be helpful.

I can understand your concerns. Breeding can be risky even under the best circumstances. The female does determine the size but that still does not mean she can't have an over sized pup. Hopefully the vet will be able to determine if she can have a normal delivery by looking at x-ray, although that is not always accurate. Is this her first litter? My best advise is to just do plenty of research on whelping and care of the mom and pups after the whelping. Be sure to have a good emergency vet on hand and when her due date is near do not leave her alone. I do pray the whelping goes well. We will be here if you have any questions.

Actually, the size of BOTH parents and the other dogs within their lineage play a role in the size of the pups. I would have asked your vet how many litters of Yorkies he/she has delivered as he/she obviously felt that his/her knowledge was more accurate than that of many long time breeders. Then I would have found a new vet. You did your research and decided on what YOU felt was the best option only to have your vet deny your requests? All you can do at this point is prepare the best you can, which is sounds like you have done. Have an x-ray done when she is at the 50 day mark. This will give you a guessitmate on how many pups to expect and more importantly will give you advanced notice if any of the pups look too big for her to deliver on her own. Try to find an experienced breeder local to you who would be willing to come and assist you during her whelp. Good luck and keep us updated.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Accidents happen I know I had one last year on around her 23rd day of heat. I thought I was safe. Make sure you do have that xray by a vet that is expierenced in the toy breed. I think that is the most important thing you can do. When it comes time make sure your vet will be available 24 hours a day. I know mom determines how many and Dad the sex but I don't know about size. I hope someone can answer that I would like to know. Love to see pictures. I hope you have a easy and safe whelping.

my big boy (10lbs) came from a 5lb mom and a 5lb dad (maybe he just decided to add up his parents weight and call that good). Mom had no problems birthing him. His two brothers put together made up his size by the time I saw him. So it all depends on their bloodlines. I would make sure and have your vet or an er vet who will be available around the time of the pups birth, just in case. I wish you the best and can't wait to see pictures.

Thanks for all the info! Hi, well I am taking the advice given. There are about 3 different choices of vets within 30 min. of me. I am going to make calls to each to find out about their $, hrs., and experience. I am reading all of your posts & and other sites trying to prepare. Hopefully all will be well. My dog is NOT just my dog! She is my baby! I have in the past raised 2 litters of kittens with eyedroppers, been given a Yorkie & a Maltese by a breeder to save (& did!) not to mention the turtles, even moles lol!, baby rabbits, squirrles, birds, stray cats, dogs, and all else that either I or my kids have brought in. I been there thru the birth of 3 litters of kittens, and 2 ? maybe three of puppies. Hopefully some of that will kick in too if any problems! But never I don't think that I have been so attatched as this time... I have read about so many dangers with the Yorkies and surgery / anesthesia / too big pups on here that it definately put the fear into me. I really thank you all for the replies and will be back I'm sure to ask more! Thanks again! Mona

I just wanted to tell you my neighbor has a little 5lb female. They went away last summer and their little girl got caught by a larger male. They were visiting a friend at the time. The male I was told was Buddy's size, he's 16lbs! I was so scared for them I told them every thing I read on YT. Their vet did x-rays and followed her closely they said. She delivered 4 girls last Sept and one passed. They are not sure why. However the other three, today are all under 5lbs and are fine. Good luck and best wishes to your little mom to be.

I ended up having to bottle feed my three pups. I would have pet milk, karo, eggs ( yolk ) on hand just in case and a bottle with a preemie nipple...I had to go to Target to find those. Make sure you are checking your Mom after she has them that she dosen't feel lumpy around her chest. If you notice that...call your vet, but also put a wet wash cloth in the micro waveand set it on her for a little while, then squeezt / mead the milk out. HOPEFULLY, you will not have any of these problems...I just want you to know to keep an eye on your mama for that. I wouldn't have known f I wasen't told and lo and behold it was a very good thing I was told! Good Luck, Angie
