| When can pups leave their mom? I've heard puppies are ready to leave their mother at age 8 weeks, is this true for small breeds like Yorkies and Silky Terriers? We got my Silky Terrier when she was 10 weeks old. |

| For a yorkie and the smaller breed dogs it is best to wait until 10-12 weeks of age.

| It is possible to leave mom at 8 weeks (if they are eating well on their own and weaned), but the recommendation is 10-12 weeks. I got my yorkie a few years ago at 8 weeks. She adjusted fine but I didn't know she would have had more social skills and was taught more my mom and litter mates is she had stayed longer with them. When I sell my litter I will be waiting the full 10-12 weeks to give them the best chance of well-rounded-ness that I can. I think the idea has to do with the size of this breed and the extra time needed for small breeds in general, they are a lot more fragile than a lab or other large puppy would be.

| Thanks for the info. My little silky terrier (9-10 lbs) had three puppies on the 16th. We have homes for them all, but the lady taking the little boy is anxious to get him home. They will be eight weeks on the 11th of May. Her hurry is that she has a trip to Estonia that has been planned forever, and she leaves on Jun 20th. If she takes him home at 8 weeks, it gives her a little over a month to work with him on potty training, etc. She does have people at home that will watch him while she's gone, but she is the principle trainer. We got our Silky at 10 weeks, and I thought she seemed little and fragile then (two years ago)! I remember I gave her a bath that first week we had her, and she shivered and seemed so cold, and I worried I'd harmed her. I put her in my shirt to warm her up! |

| Although a pup can survive leaving mom at 6 - 8 weeks with careful attention, I would never let one of my pups leave home before they are at 12+ weeks. The critical period between 6 - 12 weeks is when the pups learn lifelong lessons about respect and discipline from their mother and siblings. I have watched the subtle interactions between mom and pups and siblings and it is amazing. |

| 12 weeks is the minimum for me. However, almost all of mine are 13 to 14 weeks old before they leave. I understand her anxiousness to have her puppy. However, you are the advocate for your puppies and you have to do what's best for them. A couple more weeks will make all the difference to the life of that puppy.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I was told 10-12 weeks , i let one of my yorkie jacks go home at 10 weeks because my friend is moving and we wanted for her to get use to her before the big move, just in case, she is doing very well, the rest of the babies are still here, hopefully next weekend Charlie is going home and then Biggy will go home mid week too.. they been fully weaned since they were 8 and a half weeks, but they need the rest of the time to learn proper doggy ettiquette...LOL mama plays a lot with them and my other dogs too.. hugs, Carmen in nj |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | 12 weeks here too. The mama dog may not be nursing but she is still supervising. This is a critical time for socialization (8-12 weeks) and learning skills: stairs, leashes, sharing, etc. |

YT Addict | I think the age goings by the moms and puppies them self. The smaller the puppy the longer the breeder needs to keep them. But once the mom will not let them feed and the puppy is eating Hard food. I think that or ok to be placed. Each puppy is different. |

| General rule of thumb for Yorkies is 12 weeks. (I would say with 10 weeks being the absolute minimum.) It really isn't something determined by when the dog is fully weaned and eating solid food. The 8-12 weeks mark is a cruicial time for the pup to be with mom and littermates as they learn valuable socialization skills. (Many times, people have issues with excessive biting with pups that have been placed at a young age.) In addition, smaller dogs are more prone to hypogycemia than larger breeds. The smallest things can throw them out of their normal "balance" and put them at risk...including the adjustment period when they are in their new homes. Keeping the pups with the mom longer decreases the risk for this as well. |

| I always liked getting mine sooner, but, now that I'm going to be breeding, mine will stay longer with me. I do know breeders that let theirs go at 6 weeks, of course, they breed morkies and yorkies, maybe that makes a difference.? Last edited by phfgkl; 04-10-2009 at 05:12 AM. |
