| breeding a larger yorkie with smaller one I have a 9-lb yorkie that I am trying to breed with a 5-6 lb yorkie and it doesnt seem like the male can reach, is this something that the dog can overcome, or is help by human friends needed for success? |

| I always assist my dogs when breeding them. I do not want either to accidentally get hurt. You may want to fold a towel to make your boy taller. Somethimes you even need to "guide" them in the right direction because some boys cant hit the broad side of a barn.LOL good luck

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I have to always help my boy. I fold up a rug to give him height. I also hold the girls back legs together so he won't under shoot. It is alot of trail and error but it can be done.

| I have seen myself that even just an inch or two in height difference between these dogs will make it VERY tough for an unassisted mating. I had to get a floor pillow out for the male i used to finally be successful, poor guy, by that time he was already so tired because of all the energy it took to try to reach! |

| Thanks for the help! thanks for all the good ideas! we did try something like that but it seems as though he is 'shy' when we try to assist, they like to go off by themselves and then when I follow them they stop what they are doing. |

| How old is your male and has he ever been used for breeding before? It can be a problems if you have a shy inexperienced male. It is best if you can sit on the floor with the female and be patient. If he is interested enough he will eventually come around and start trying. I always just hold the female by her front shoulder with her rear facing away. You can have a folded towel or blanket behind her. The other suggestion would be to put a comforter in an ex-pen and just sit back and watch. Sometimes they can get more foot leverage that way. A experienced female will learn to squat down some so the male can reach. You just have to be sure to be right there if he does tie her. If all else fails then you have to AI. |
