| Help! Hi everyone, I know this question may not necessarily belong in this category, but I wanted the advice of experts in the field, especially because most regular pet owners do not have this situation. I live in Queens, Ny. I adopted a dog from a previous owner who got her from "puppy boutique" in brooklyn NY. She is listed as a purebred yorkie and she is about 14-15 pounds. Clearly, she is not a purebred yorkie. She is very long (not fat), and she has a long muzzle. Not sure what she was mixed with, back when she was bred at some unfortunate puppy mill but what can I do now? She was Born July 2007. Anyway getting to my question.. She does not have her tail docked, is it too late to do this now? It is quite unsightly. She is NOT spayed. Her nipples are out all over her underside. Supposedly, she hasn't been through any heat cycle yet. I'm petrified that each day that passes will bring it on, and I want to get her spayed ASAP. (I have no intention of breeding her, nor would breeding a nonpurebreed as a purebreed would further the destruction of the yorkie pedigree- and I do not want to perpetuate this ridiculous cycle). She is the most active dog in the world- to the point its annoying- constantly standing on her hind legs and pouncing on me. When she pees she stands on her 2 front legs and puts her back legs completely up. Its quite scary/unattractive to look at. She does not listen to any command whatsoever. I really don't know what to do with her. PLEASE ADVISE- I AM IN WAY OVER MY NEWBIE HEAD. Where do I get her spayed? When? Can I even? How do I stop her unruly behavior? She doesn't understand no, even when I ignore her when she does something bad (like the excessive jumping). |

| I am not a breeder so I can't help you there. But she is absolutely adorable! As for her spaying, she can be spayed at anytime. It would be better when she is not in heat as it is a little more complicated (and probably more expensive). If she was born in 2007, I would think that she has been in heat at least once if not twice. You should find yourself a trustworthy vet and ask them about spaying. I don't think you can get her tail docked at this point...it is part of her now. As for the behaviour, you should look into training classes. My Maggie is a jumper and while she still tries to jump on me, I've learned through the classes how to stop her from doing so. It is not a cruel thing as it makes it a better life for both you and the dog. Don't know if you have a Petsmart in your area, but they offer training classes or maybe your vet will know of someone. Good luck with her and thank you for rescuing her from her previous owner.

| A training class is a great idea. You both will learn a lot about how to 'deal' with one another, it will surely bring you guys closer. She seems like she is very active and the more active dogs usually do really well with some training and guidance in the right form. They will usually be much more tollerable when they know clearly what you expect from them and when you are able to cleary let her know what you expect, and training will help you to teach that to her. Active dogs usually learn very quickly. You could also get a book, but formal training gives you something to do together and that is nice too. Good Luck, she sounds like she has a lot of potential to make you very happy with her. Just give her the chance. I don't have solid advise as far as spaying her except just make an appointment and get it done, usually the longer you wait they charge more for it (that was my experience). Her tail isn't a huge deal, I never got my girls tail done and it doesn't bother me at all. P.S. a daily walk through your part of town will help get her energy directed in a good way too. |

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | looks like a yorkie Well, to me she appears to look like a yorkie but the size sugguest to me that she might be a silky. A silky is generally larger with the longer nose. But she could have just had larger parents that were breed and she is a large (Teapot) yorkie. as for the tail docking. Just pretend she's from the UK. They don't dock them there!!! LOL. No, some vets will dock while being spayed if it is not too thick, but at this age. I'd leave her alone, I think they are cute with tails. Hope other breeders will also give thier advice, I'll watch what they say.

| Sorry to be blunt but if things she does are unattractive to you and you can't get past that, as you say, it would be a nice thing to do for the little gal to place her with someone else that will love her in spite of everything and it will be a load off your mind as well. hopefully, you will begin to look at her differently and love her anyway in spite of her faults. It is easy to get in over your head with these little guys. That being said, there are places that the vet will laser the tail off and it is hardly a problem at all but I personally would leave it on. You can get her spayed anytime. You are right however, she does NOT look like a purebred Yorkie to me. Although you can't discern that from size alone anymore. Because of the many irrepsonsible breeders trying to capitalize on the popularity of the breed, but not promoting breed standards, you see Yorkies with wieghts all over the scale these days. In regards to her tail, pups have their tails docked at less than a week old. At this point, it would not be considered docking, it would be amputation and would require surgery. In any case, it's the breed standard for a Yorkie, and per your admission, you do not feel she is purebred, so there is no standard to adhere to. Why bother putting her through that? As far as having her spayed, you can do that anytime and based on your decription, it would be the wise move to make, for more reasons that one. I think that taking her to some classes might be a good idea, as others have mentioned. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 03-10-2009 at 10:10 AM. | |

| I'm sort of confused. You first posted on 2/3 saying you were looking for a small yorkie . . .now today you post and say you adopted a very large yorkie and then go on to say how unsightly her tail and her nipples are and how she is constantly all over the place. So I'm curious to know why you adopted her? She wasn't what you were looking for at all according to your first post. To me, it sounds like you dislike this poor little girl and that is truly sad! IMHO I would first think about finding her a proper home with someone who will actually love her for who she is and what she looks like.

| My own opinion is that she most likely is a Yorkie, though not to standard. She is a cute little girl, though, whether to standard or not. If you can't get past her appearance, however, the kind thing to do would be to find a home for her where she could be loved for who she is. Her behavior is a training issue that certainly could be resolved. Yorkies are terriers and can have a high energy level so they do need to get plenty of exercise though there are some that are more laid back. If she is your only dog, a lot of her behavior could be the result of too much pent-up energy. She would probably benefit from training classes and some play dates with other dogs so she could run off some of her energy. I have a couple of off-standard Yorkies that I got before I really knew the breed. Though I don't breed them, they are my babies and I wouldn't take the world for them. Every Yorkie, standard or not, is such a loving creature that it's impossible for me not to love them. Best of luck with your girl. She really looks to be a sweetie and I wish the best for her. |

| Wow, is there anything you do like about her? Didn't you see her or a picture of her and know about her weight before you adopted her? If she was born 7/07 she should have had her first heat aprox 6-10 months of age. I don't know why her nipples would hang to the side. If she is coming into heat they could get swollen, but wouldn't hang out to the side. I would NEVER dock a tail at her age. Most dogs don't come trained, thats up to the owners to teach them was acceptable or not. If she hasn't had any training you can't blame her for bad behavior, she dosen't know any better. Take her to a training class, I bet you'd have fun with her. If you can't get past her looks, I would rehome her and find a person that is not looking for a certain Yorkie look, and just wants a companion. take care |

| Hi everyone, Yes I was looking for a yorkie. I was looking for several months. When I found her (online) her owner said that she was a purebred yorkie and they couldn't care for her anymore. When I went to meet her I was just so overwhelmed with finally finding a dog that I wasn't really thinking properly, and completely forgot about what I was really looking for. I don't think she is ugly, she just wasn't what I was expecting, especially because I thought she was a yorkie. Her previous owner still thinks shes a purebred yorkie, and unfortunately they believed the pet store. I was a bit surprised at how big she actually was once I got her home. As for the tail and unspayed thing- I didn't know what was proper procedure, and now that I know its the equivalent of amputation I would NEVER get that done. There is obviously no need to hurt her. Getting spayed however is another story, and unfortunately I think its a necessary thing to do, as I am not capable of dealing with a pregnant dog. As for her temperment, I was reading about how another one of the awful things that pet stores do is take the babies away from their mother at such a young age that they don't learn about what is relatively acceptable behavior. After spending some time with her, I can see she's pretty smart, she just doesn't know anything- like a baby. So slowly working with her I can see I will be a MUCH better mother to her and let her have a great life. She had an appt with the vet and things are going much more smoothly. Sorry I offended people here, I was just freaking out because I had literally just gotten her and didn't know what to do. I really am thankful tho- bc you all answered so quickly. Thanks everyone! |
