| Nursing mom eating questions. Ok, so My 5 1/2 yorkie had a litter of 8 sat night, all went well with the delivery and all the puppies came out alive, and are doing great( i think and hope). The next day she started acting a little funny and had a fever of 103.5. So i took her to the vet and and they found 3 placentas still stuck inside her and did surgery to get them out and also spayed her while she was under. Since then she has not been eating or drinking. I use a dropper to feed her water and have tried just about everything to get her to eat with no luck. She doesn't even want chicken. she will eat 3 or 4 small bites and then try and hide the rest. I am worried about her milk supply.. We have been bottle feeding the puppies some because we are not sure they are getting enough if any at all. They are constintly suckling on her, so i'm assuming there is milk in there. How do i know she has milk, and anyone have any suggestions on getting her to eat? |

| Wow...eight is some litter!! Congratulations! I've never had a Mom have surgery while nursing but I would imagine she is sore. For now, it's good that you're feeding the pups, even if Mom has milk. I would weigh them daily to make sure they're all gaining. They should all be plumping out and you should see good vigor with them all. Your girl probably isn't eating well due to the surgery. Hopefully she gets her appetite back soon. She definitely needs lots of water to produce milk. Maybe you try some chicken broth with the chicken. She might like that better. Also, you may get her to eat more if you hand feed her. My girls are usually picky anyway right after whelping so I spoil them with things like chicken, turkey, eggs and vanilla ice cream. Some Nutri-Cal would help her at this time, too. To see if she has milk, squeeze and pull up on a nipple, much like a baby does while nursing. Try it on one of the rear teats as they will be larger. Eight is a very large litter so keep a good eye on the pups since it will be tough for Mom to feed 8 growing appetites |

♥ Catherine My Love ♥ Donating Member | Feeding Mommy Wow, that's a lot for one little girl to handle - surgery and 8 babies! That's a HUGE litter. : ) While pregnant and nursing, we feed our mommies puppy food mixed with puppy milk replacer. We make it very warm and they seem to gobble it right up. : ) Don't know if that helps in your situation. You could try the milk replacer on it's own and see if she'll take it. Nutrical is also a great suggestion while she's not eating too much. Good luck! Keep us posted!
