Confused Question for Breeders: OK for puppy to go home at 52 days old (7 1/2 weeks)???

Hi everyone. I joined this board two weeks ago and I just love it here. I really value and trust
people's opinions on YT - so with that being said I have some really important questions for you

#1) The breeder I'm getting my puppy from (already put $400 down for a deposit) is in Minnesota. Her website has a lot of info if you want to check it out and tell me your thoughts. Since I'm so new to owning a dog I really can't tell if she's reputable or not.

#2) The breeder lets her pups go home at 7 weeks. I'll be picking mine up when she is 52 days old (7 1/2 weeks). I know this is very young. Should I be concerned that this could be a signal that she is not a good breeder?

I want to make the best choice possible I already feel attached to the puppy I put a deposit on - just look at my avatar if you don't believe me The breeder was very professional and polite on the phone and has given me weekly updates on her condition as well as weekly pictures.

Please help - - Thanks so much everyone!!!
I appreciate it so, so, so much

I don't know about that breeder personally, however I can tell you reputable breeders don't place puppies till they are 10 to 12 weeks old. IMO letting them go earlier is a sure sign that something isn't right. I would NOT recommend anyone to get a puppy from someone like that.

I keep all my puppies till they are 10 to 12 weeks of age and have been known to hold some here longer if they are tiny.

Thanks for your response - - What do you think I should do?? Her website makes her look like a great breeder. Now I'm worried. The deposit is non-refundable, plus I know it's weird but I already feel connected to this little puppy. I've seen her grow through pictures and I feel bonded with her I stare at her little face all day just counting the days till she's at home with my family

Help.....

Does the puppy have any shots? Some breeders let their puppies leave at such a young age so they don't have the cost of shots and well checks at the vet for them...they let the new owner get everything done which is wrong.

I don't even advertise my puppies until they are 10 weeks old and they don't leave until they are 12 weeks. That means they have been to my vet for at least 2 sets of shots and well checks and they have been well socialized not only with their mother and litter mates but with my other adult dogs and other people.

Yes,
Here's what the breeder told me:
Our Puppies:
Our puppies have been checked by the veterinarian at about 5 - 6 weeks old, they will have been vaccinated twice by 7 - 8 weeks old, they will have been wormed weekly from 4 weeks old and they all have a one year genetic health guarantee.
The parents to each litter have been genetically tested for health issues before we consider using them for breeding to ensure the health and welfare of the puppies and parents.
The parents and puppies eat quality dog food and are given supplements and vitamins. They have excellent care and are groomed regularly and are current on all their health care needs (vaccinations/worming/etc.)
The puppies are well socialized from birth: they are handled regularly, nails trimmed weekly from 4 weeks old. They are use to regular household noises and use puppy pads from about 4 weeks old. They have much TLC and we care about every puppy we raise; we know the personalities of each puppy and share this with the new adopted families.
We know how important it is that the puppies have a great start in life to be able to be the wonderful companion that families want. We make every effort to be sure each puppy has the best care from birth.
We love and care for our puppies and dogs and we spend everyday taking care of these puppies. Our dogs and puppies do not live in tiny crates where they are forced to learn to potty on themselves: our puppies start using puppy pads at 4 weeks old in their puppy play pen. Our puppies are not over crowded and they live in a clean environment that is maintained 24/7: they have beds, toys, chews, water and quality puppy food 24/7. They are in excellent health when they leave for the new home. Raising our puppies in a commitment we take very seriously and we are proud to show off out babies and want to be sure that they go to loving homes.
The parents to all our puppies have all been tested for any genetic health issues before we consider using them for breeding.

We go above and beyond many breeders in the care and welfare of our dogs and puppies. We are very proud of our reputation and what we offer. All of the parents that we use for breeding are genetically tested for health problems before we consider using them for breeding.

I was not impressed with her site at all, many red flags.

She advertises designer dogs, claims that they are heatheir than purebreds..... Which is not necessarily so.

She also says on the about page that 4 adults (her, her husband, daughter and her sister) all do this full time, which to me means they live on the money they make from their dog breeding operation. Most reputable breeders don't make any money on their pups and most definitely do not make enough to support 4 adults.

I also did not like her reasoning about being 7 weeks old the best time for their pups to go to their new homes.

These are just a few things of the many I noticed.
Good luck and enjoy your baby.

There are a couple of red flags there for me but it could just be me.

1. Two sets of shots before the age of 8 weeks doesn't sound right at all. My vet started mine at 6 weeks, then 10 and their next ones will be at 14.

2. If the dogs are fed a high quality food they don't need supplements.

3. The part about: "Our puppies are not over crowded and they live in a clean environment that is maintained 24/7".
Does that mean they are in their home or in a shed that is 'maintained' and kept clean?

Hello....first let me say Welcome to Yorkie Talk! We are happy to have you here and hope that you will find it a great place and stay around for a long time to come. Personally, I love this place and spend at least a few hours on here every day.

Getting to your questions...starting with #2. My personal opinion (and that of many on here I am absolutely sure), is that 7-71/2 weeks is MUCH to young for a yorkie puppy or any small breed to be leaving it's mom and siblings. I have heard stories of such young pups going to their new homes that early and being okay.....I have also read horror stories. Not only are they barely weaned (maybe) at that age, but the smaller breeds are also prone to bouts of hypoglycemia (low blood suger) in stressful/new situations. I took a quick look on the website. On the "Our Puppies & Policies" page there is a paragraph on the 7-14 week stage as being the socialization period. Yes, but the puppy needs to learn those early socialization skills from it's mother & siblings Their play fighting and biting is not only play, but learning as well on what is acceptable play (not to rough) and what is not. I have seen it for myself with the litter I had, how mom steps in and corrects puppies and/or mom being what I thought was mean or rough, when in reality she was teaching the pups valuable lessons. Yorkie puppies and all small breed puppies should not leave for their new homes until 12 weeks of age ideally....sometimes a week or two earlier, depending on the circumstances.

That being said, in looking at the website; right away I would not buy from them. I see the word teacup right off (there is no such thing in the yorkie standard and not something to be breeding for). I don't see any pictures of the dogs being bred, and they have too many different breeds/mixed breeds for my liking. I don't know if they are good or bad and I'm not stating they are one way or the other. I also have nothing against mixed breeds, designer dogs, whatever anyone wants to refer to them as. I'm just saying that, well first of all, it's yorkies only for me, and after all I've learned from this website and the books I've read, this is not a breeder(s) I would buy from. JMO

I wish you the best of luck with your new baby. I don't know if your breeders would agree, but I would try to convince them to keep your pup until it is at least 10 weeks old. Have you gone to the breeders home, have you seen the pup in person and/or it's parents? Have you asked tons of questions and gotten answers to you satisfaction? These are all things that you should do and expect your breeder to allow you to do/see. I hope some of what I've said helps. Good luck to you.

Since in your earlier post you said she is in communication with you often, perhaps you can talk to her about your concerns. See if she is willing to hold your puppy till 10 weeks of age. I think honesty and communication is very important between breeder and buyer so it sure wouldn't hurt to try and explain your concerns and take it from there.

I do think her website has many redflags though!

How much does the pup weigh?

I have mixed feeling about this. If this is a puppymill is the puppy really better off staying there longer? I doubt it is getting the attention it needs. I think I would bring the puppy home if you could give it 24 hour supervision.

I keep mine for 10-12 weeks..depending on puppy.

they breed on 20 acres

chi's
yorkies
german shepards
daschund
maltese
english bull dog
Pomeranians
poodles

then mix them all up and call them designer breeds
maltipoos
morkie
porkie

Thanks again for everyone's responses

I just got off the phone with the breeder and I feel better now! She only has a few litters a year and the puppies are kept inside her house so she can monitor them. She places them just before the eight week mark.
She invited me out next weekend to see the puppy and to see where the pups are raised and cared for. This makes me feel better.

Also, I checked with the county she lives in and spoke directly to the woman who issues the breeders the kennel licenses. The licensor stated that the breeder is current on her license and has never had a violation or complaint. She also said she knows of a few people who have bought dogs from her and had a great experience. One even went back for another pup The licensor also said she just did a pop-in visit in the fall and she saw with her own eyes that the place looked great.

This makes me feel a **little** better. I will keep everyone updated on what I find when I go out there next weekend.
Wish me luck that I find great conditions and this is the pup and breeder for me!!!

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions!!

Yes, you should be very concerned that it what that indicates. In many states, it's actually illegal to place pups under 8 weeks, so depending on the laws in your state, she could actually be running an illegal breeding program. As most can tell you, it's not advised to place Yorkie pups until around 12 weeks of age. I would seriously question any breeder who placed them when there were very young.

As others have pointed out that there are many questionable red flags with this breeder. If you choose to ignore them and support that kind of practice, that is of course, your right. I would however, advise you to prepare for any consequences you may face as a result.
