| Breeder mentor wanted Hello All, First off I would like to thank everyone for just taking out the time to read my post. My husband and I have been Yorkie Lovers for over 20 years now and read everything we could get our hands on about the history of the breed and it's standards. After pondering the on the idea for about 6 years now, we've decided that we'd like to learn about proper breeding and what it takes to become registered breeders. We are well aware of the fact that this is going to take great mentoring, time and lots of money. With that in mind we have taken the necessary financial steps towards our dream. We are in need of a mentor that will help us when necessary with advice and extensive knowledge. I appreciate all those that decide to reply. GOD BLESS. Mrs. Bean

| Congrats on your decision to ask for a mentor before breeding!! There are quite a few breeder/exhibitors in Texas on here. Hopefully they can help you. Also, you might go to some shows in your area and meet a knowledgable breeder. Infodog.com will have lists of shows in your area. Also, go to YTCA to find a reputable breeder near you. Best of luck!!!

| Not only will you find a possible mentor on this site (talk to BJH, she is great at helping anyone), but when you do decide to purchase your puppy from a breeder you should be getting that breeder for life. With my two babies I have gotten a mentor from my males breeder. She is willing to answer any questions I have, as well as she has become a part of my family. I keep her involved in the little male's life and she keeps me updated on what is going on in her kennel, so if you can find not only a mentor but a breeder for life you will be well on your way to being one of the best breeders out there.

BJH thanks for making such a suggestion. When I first decided to breed yorkies I looked at it as a money maker, but after talking to lots of breeders to find my dogs I have been very selective of my pair and have chosen to breed top quality dogs that will one day bred a champion. I no longer look at it as a money oppurtunity but as a chance to improve the breed and one day show a good quality dog that could win champions. I have talked to many breeders about breeding my pair and have yet to really find the best mentor for me, but with a great vet on my side (my aunt) helping me find a great breeder as well as doing my own research I have made a check list in what qualities I want from a mentor and what qualities I want to learn from her breeding program. Hope you find your mentor that fits well into your breeding system that you want to creat!

| The best way to find a mentor who will teach you how to be a responsible breeder is to seek them out at shows. Infodog has a schedule of shows by state: InfoDog AKC Dog Show Information - Search by State |

| I don't know of anyone to recommend to you, but I would just like to say kudos to you for beginning responsibly and researching and learning FIRST. Sadly, you don't see enough of that these days. |

| Mentor Where in Texas do you live? Have you talked to any show people near you? IMO, the best way to get started is to do your homework on the dogs you like. Go to shows and educate your "eye". When you find the type of yorkie that you like best find out what lines they came from. Contact that breeder and try to perhaps get a show prospect from them. You will be way ahead of the game if you start with a show prospect and finish the dog before you even think about breeding. If you buy from someone reputable, they will help to mentor you and will want you to succeed because you have their kennel name out there in the ring. Best wishes for your success. Ruth |
