| I don't believe she is pregnant, but Lilly's breasts are still so swollen and her vulva is too. She came into heat on Dec 21st, that was her first big heat, about four months before she had kind of a mini ? heat. I planned on breeding her on her next heat after this. I know for a fact that no breeding took place between her and Diesel while I was here. My mom watched my dogs Jan 1-3 for me, but said that there was no breeding at all. However, her nipples are still swollen and the breast tissue is very full feeling around them, not like when Lola had the lumps under them. She has filled out slightly, but does not have a big belly at all. I attribute the filling out to her just maturing and the fact that it's winter and she doesn't play outside much right now. Is it typical to have a false pregnancy this long? Here are a couple of pictures of her belly...

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | IF she is having a false pregnancy, than I guess from what I've read that yes it is normal to last this long. I believe they last about as long as a real pregnancy lasts and the female will even adopt a stuffed animal near the end as one of her pups. Having said that, it may also be that Lilly's fullness is due to maturity. The pictures look alot like Halle did weeks after her first cycle. When Halle had her first heat last November, I can remember for quite a while after it was officially over, wondering just like you about pregnancy (knowing it couldn't be), and/or false pregnancy. What I believe now, is that once they have their first heat, their teats & vulva never go back to the "nothing" size that they were. Don't laugh to hard at me, but I remember before Halle's first heat I had wondered how puppies would ever fit through her birth canal. Now, since "becoming a woman", though no longer swollen, her vulva is not the itty bitty thing it was before.

| It sounds as if she is just experiencing a false pregnancy. They will last just as long as a normal pregnancy would, but in the end you won't have puppies. If there wasn't any tying between your male and female at all you have nothing to worry about.

| I am dealing with the same thing. Bailey won't even be a year old until April so I know she is very young to have puppies but she looks like those pictures. I took Brewsky (my boy) to my parents to make sure they did not breed but I might have brought him home too early after she stopped bleeding. For Bailey's sake I hope she is not pregnant but if she is...what should I be looking for? I am so new to this and I really wanted to wait until she was older and I knew more about it so I was prepared. But now I am nervous because if she is pregnant I want to be able to help her as much as possible and be knowledgeable about what is happening to her and the puppies. Can someone help me and let me know what I should be looking for and such. Thanks!

| There is not much you can do right now except wait. Don't take this the wrong way its the same thing I have been told. Do you think that there was a tie? Was the female responsive to the male? If so watch for her belly to expand, increased eating, as well as possible movements. There could be some slight swelling in the tummy area, vulva, as well as raised nipple, during a false pregnancy so make sure that you take her to the vet around 45 days from bringing him home (if there's a good chance a tie could have happened without you knowing) to do an ultrasound to see if she is with pup. I'm kind of in the same boat. I have a female in her first heat (I'm thinking she's around days 4-7, hope I caught it soon enough ), and I noticed it after I got home from vacation, but they were pinned together while I was gone because my husband was working long days. So I am keeping them seperated and will be keeping a close eye on her for awhile just in case. I got some good advise from Woogie Man and BJH on my thread, but it basically states what I have said above.

| I am not sure if there was a tie. They sleep in the same kennel because that is the only way they will not whine all night but their kennel is right next to our bed so if they did tie it wasn't during the night. I work full time and my boyfriend does also so during the day or if we are gone at night/weekends they are in there together, so it is possible there was. I am so nervous because she is so small and young. I just don't want her health to be in question. I thought with him being away from her for almost a month I was doing the right thing and she wouldn't get pregnant yet. Thanks for your advice though I appreciate any help I can get.

You did well in sending the male to another house while she was in heat. I guess to make a better guess at the possiblity of pregnancy, we'd need to know when her heat started & when/how long you kept the male away. Counting the first day of bleeding as day one, hopefully the male was gone during days 9 through 17 for sure......longer to be even safer. I highly suggest that from now on when you don't want puppies, that during her heat cycle (21 days) you do not put them in the kennel together. I also have my stud in the house, and there were quite a few sleep deprived nights while Halle was in her first heat because they had to be separated. That's just part of being a breeder. Keep us posted on your what you find out. We are here to help, whatever the outcome.

| She started bleeding on the 13th of Jan and I took Brewsky to my parents that night and did not pick him up until the second week of Feb. (I believe it was the 8th, so the start of the second week) so it would have been almost a month that they were apart. She seems like she is getting a little bigger around the nipple area and she puked twice yesterday...does that mean anything? Should I wait to take her to the vet, since it could be a false pregnancy? Thanks for all your help!

| Just wondering if you took her to the vet and what the end result was! My Leila as the same as the pics you post, but it is impossible for her to be pregger's because she never left the house and she is our only dog. but her swollen boobies have not gone down. I know they are never going to be the same size, but I didn;t think they would stay this big! We have an appointment with our vet scheduled for next week. |
