Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Testing prior to mating? Planned breedings require physical vet exams, blood panels, brucellious (sp?) testing, Some vets do ultra sounds on the females checking for pyro, size of the pelvic area. My males are also checked prior to mating. I keep the results in my files. What testing do you do or require before breeding? |

Ears, eyes & heart examined. Hips, knees x-rayed. However, a complete OFA is preferred. BAT.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | We OFA, CERF, and have the vet check at 1 year old: Ears, eyes & heart. We do a full blood panel too. We then repeat blood work, and physicals prior to breeding. |

| Yes, however, it only guarantees that your breeding males and females are clear of genetic defects and/or infections. These tests don't guarantee that your dogs aren't carriers. There is no DNA marker to date that can identify your dogs clear from Shunt. Being a reputable breeder is defined by how they handle a situation should a life threatening issue arise with your pup.

As a YTCA member, I have a code of ethics and coduct to follow. And if you're doing selective breeding and breeding 1 or 2 litters a year you are better able to have those tests done. oops! and I meant to say that there is no DNA marker that can guarantee that your dogs are carriers of SHUNT

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I agree with you. I have made it a matter of importance, that all my dogs are tested. It does not predict anything genetic, but I also know my lines and stay in contact with previous buyers. They advise me of color, size, spay/neuter, teeth removals, and any health issues--which so far has only been eating--they seem to be picky eaters. |

I cheat. In my contract, I offer free grooming and boarding for the life of the pup. My lines were established 45 years ago by my breeder. So, I have a pretty good idea of what to expect. But, you never know.

| I thought they had to be 2 years to do testing? If my dogs can have it done now and it be accurate I want to start.... |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Does anyone have an opinion on what the minimum testing a buyer should expect from a breeder? Perhaps, a list of minimum testing needed, and recommended testing needed?

| I always understood the OFA was to be done at 2 years as well but yet I have had my Males and soon my Females OFA'D at 1 year. They certified them, I have Biewers and I just finished my final breeding of my Yorkie pair. My past breeding experience was with large breeds. So should I redo their OFA'S redone at 2 years?? Any suggestions would be helpful..
