| Needing advice Hello all, i am a proud owner of two yorkie's tinkerbell and bear and although they are still puppies 6 mos and 12 weeks i figuered i would start learning everything that i need to know about breeding them now i have atleast a year if not more ( tinkerbell is only 12 weeks) if there is anyone out there who could point me in the right direction, books videos magazines or anything that would give me more knowledge of the situation i would be very grateful all advice is welcomed. I have aalready done my research as far as the negative things that could happen ie c-section breach still born disease and the list goes on and on. |

| If your desire is to become a responsible, ethical breeder, then your best option is to find a breeding mentor to work with you and guide you through the process of firstly evaluating your dogs--at this point, you really have no clue if they will even develop into quality specimens of the breed that even should be bred. He/she will also guide you through the actual breeding/whelping/raising a litter process. You can read all the books and online info in the world, but it's no subsitute from learning and seeing first hand by having an experienced breeder to work with. |

| Mentor?? Thank you for the time you took to answer y question i really do appreciate that. As for having them checked i wouldnt know where to start other than my vet. And she says they are perfect for it however i see your point as far as getting a mentor this sounds like a great idea and im sure i could really learn alot from her/him. I guess by reading the books i am tring to gain knowledge on the different types of diseases possible complictions i really do love my dogs they are not like my children they are my children. How would i go about finding someone who is willing to become my mentore? Do i just post it on here? Thanks again |

| You can go to dog shows and talk to breeders there. Maybe you will find a mentor. Reading is a great place to start though. What has your vet tested your Yorkies for?

| By 'evaluating' I meant to help you determine how they measure up to the breed standard. Your vet will only be able to tell you if they are physically sound, but not if they are quality representations of the breed that *should* be bred. (Generally speaking, your dog may be a great pet, but may not possess qualities that should be passed on to future generations. Unless your vet is a long time Yorkie expert, or professional judge, he/she will not be able to advise you on that.) Something to consider: You state that your vet says they "are perfect for it"... How on Earth could ANYONE, vet or otherwise be able to determine that when they are only 12 weeks & 6 months of age!? They still have a lot of growing up to do before that can be determined. Ellie Mae gave you some good advice on how to go about finding a mentor. Attend shows, introduce yourself, contact breeders in your area, etc...keep trying and trying until you find someone. What about the breeder you got your little ones from? He/she would be a good place to start, and, they should know their own lines pretty well and could help you out. |

| BamaFan121s My vet has 3 yorkies she was telling me physically for the 6 almost 7 month old that all of his bloodwork is fine and as far as his temperment i dont know how or why my vet stated that but i am just here for some prof. help i want to know everything that i should know from someone who has experienced breeding PERSONALLY. that is the reason i am here in my opinion the vet told me this only because of the high level of care that i provide and bears bloodlines however i know that these are not the only things that determine breed standard however i do not have the eye for that as these are my first yorkies i have a breeder that lives up the street from me however i do not like her breeding style and i am not going to ask her for advice i feel that yorkie talk is a good place because of some of the VERY EXPERIENCED breeders. i know that it is a lot of hard work but i am up for it. does anyone know of any know of any good breeders here in nc? |

| Your best bet would be to go to some dog shows and see if you can meet some reputable breeders who will give you advice. You can find a schedule of shows by state here: InfoDog AKC Dog Show Information - Main Menu |

I don't know of any breeders in NC, but Lady'sMom gave you a link to some upcoming shows...that's probably the best place to start to find a mentor. Or as I mentioned earlier, try talking with the breeder you got your little ones from--no one will know their bloodlines better than those who produced them. You may also want to check and see if there are any kennel clubs in your area, or any facilities that offer handling classes.

Just to warn you......you won't get much support at shows if you want to breed a parti. Partis are disqualified from showing because it is a color fault. Please read this (third paragraph): Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (Awards) This is a very heated subject on YT, so you will get lots of opinions.

There are Parti breeders here who will be more supportive. You might want to search for "parti" here and get an idea of the emotional you will stir up! Here's a recent thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...onfussion.html

| I'm not an advocate of breeding partis...mainly because it's rare that you see it being done with good intentions. And quite honestly, I don't have the time or desire or energy to travel down THAT path today. (It's been a rough week, what can I say.) There are, however, several members here who do breed them and have extensively researched many parti lines. You may want to contact them for info/help. They may be familiar with that line and could offer you more assistance or know what direction to point you in. Look up members JeanieK and Pinehaven--they are YT's resident parti advocates.
