| Well, first have they both had blood panels, bile acid testing, knees checked and even better would be to add on testing for eyes, ears, hips and thyroid? You should be boarding the female while the breed. Ties should always be assisted. If the females pulls away, damage can occur. When the pups are born, if they can't be placed, you will need to take them if the owner of the female can't or they will go to a shelter. Do you have a contract with the females owner? Are they both standard and have they been checked by someone who could tell you like a judge or an experienced breeder? Does the owner of the female have money set aside for a c-section and do they understand that they could lose their girl? These are some things I'd consider before breeding. If the female's heat just started, it isn't time to breed yet.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | When I bought Joey, the breeder told me that lots of people will ask me to breed him. She wasn't kidding, but most people won't tell you how much your dog will change once he is bred. Breeders have to put up with a lot more than the rest of us do, and I hope you do more research before you decide to do this. Another thing I learned on Yorkietalk is that it's possible for your dog to catch a sexually transmitted disease even if it's the first time for both. Have you had your dog evaluated for his suitability? So many diseases are genetic and don't show up until age 2 or 3, that's why the tests are important. Best of luck!

| I agree with all the above posts!! Breeding is for the betterment of the breed. Not something you rush into without knowing what you're doing and what you're getting into!! Some people research for years for all the things they need to know! Please get all the facts, esp. all the tests from the Vet for the stud and the female. With everything that is involved I let the breeding up to the pro's. Good-Luck...

| I think you should take some time and learn more about breeding!!! Breeding your male will change him, marking your house for starters. The thing with having a yorkie is everyone tells you "you should have puppies you could make money" A good breeder doesn't make money, they do it for the love of the breed, not the money. Quote:

| My suggestion also is to go to the Breeder's Thread of the forum. There is a wealth of information there! Good Luck!

It takes a lot of time and research to adequately prepare yourself (and your dog) for breeding, even if you just own the stud and not the female. I would suggest researching and adequately preparing FIRST and then determining if stud life is the way to go for your little guy. | |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | There is a wealth of information here at YT about breeding - and, there are members here with years and decades of experience who are willing to help you. Take a look around, maintain an open mind as to your current plans, and lend an ear to those who are willing to share their years of experience. Breeding is soooo complicated, so I'm glad you're looking for help. Getting good information upfront is an excellent way to ensure you're proceeding for the best possible outcome.

| check your finances There is a lot of advice available from people who have been breeding for a long time. Listen carefully to everything, and find a mentor you can work with in person and a good veterinarian who does c-sections and likes small dogs. Read books and go to seminars put on by your local dog clubs. Very very important, save up some money because you are going to spend amazing amounts of it. Good luck!
