Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Tube feeding help please! My boy stopped sucking yesterday so I started tube feeding every 3 hours. The last time I feed was 5am. I went to check on him about 1 hour 45 minutes later and he found it himself and was suckling. My question... How often do I tube feed now if he is feeding some on his own? I don't want to over fill him but I want him to get enough and I know mom has very little milk. I know you all are not vets but I need a little advice. Just tell me what you have done in the past. What worked for you what didn't. Thank you so much. I will be calling my vet when he opens to get his advice also.

| How old is the pup? I would try not to tube feed him at all. The act of sucking will bring the milk in and if you can get him to suck on a bottle it will strengthen his suction.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | He is 8 days old. I have been letting him suck and Mom's milk is not producing like it should. The vet gave her a shot at 4 days and it didn't help at all. She is almost dry.

| He certainly should be able to suck on a bottle by 8 days and it's much safer then to tube him. As the above poster said let him nurse as much as possible and weigh him 2 times a day. That should be a good guage of how much you'll have to supplement |

| I'm so sorry, Tube feeding is still very scary for me and any sign he can suck on a nopple would be enough to make me stop trying to tube. I've had great success using Gerber Preemie nipples, even worked on a 1 oz newborn. A little Karo syrup on the nipple might give him a little extra energy to suckle. Good luck. I'm sure lots more people will soon be on helping you out. |

| The reason tubing is so dangerous is if the tube is not place correctly and the milk goes into the lungs it can be fatal very quidkly. In 20 years I only ever had one I had to tube for the first week. Even though I'm a nurse I was scared the whole time I had to do it and was soooo relived to start using the bottle when he would take it. Like the above poster said try honey or karo on the nipple and he should nurse from it. There are so many nipples out there to try. I used the long thin ones that were almost like moms teats. |

| I have never bottled fed but tube fed.. so I know nothing about bottles.. but I always would tube feed and then her top up on mom.. then after two weeks she was on the teat herself.. so we knew she was going to make it.. she was not strong enough to suckle and did for maybe a minute and then wanted to sleep for 4 hours.. she was going to deydrate.. so we began to tube feed her.. it was our gracie and we still have her.. she will be threee in may... anne |

It is very very scary.. and as long as baby is fussing.. and crying.. you know you have it in the right place.. that was the only thing that kept me going.. if she did not cry.. tube came out again and I would try again...anne | |

| I have not had to do this ( thank goodness), but Anne I sure wish I lived closer to you so that I could have learned from your experience. |
