| Help ok so my best friend's yorkie just had 2 puppies today. she accidently got preggo in her first heat. the puppies look healthy and fine. I just have a few questions. 1. someone told her to put the mom and pups in the bath tub with blankets... I dont know if thats really alright or not. 2.how do we know if all the pups are out? 3.how do we know if the pups are getting proper nutrition and that they are actually getting milk from the teat? 4.are there any signs that we need to watch for to know that the mom or pups are not doing well?? any help would be greatly appreciated!!! we totally did not expect this litter!!! Thanks!!!! |

1. No to the bathtub thing Mom and pups should be in some sort of box or crate, some people use an under the bed rubbermaid storage boxe for the first couple of weeks. As the pups get bigger and start climbling, she will need to get a pen or box with sides tall enough that they cannot climb out. Right now also, the room they are in should be warm and also likely a heating pad under some towels on the lowest setting to keep the pups warm. 2. If mom is resting comfortably and in no distress or signs of labor, then likely all of the pups are whelped. More importantly, you need to be sure that both of the placentas for the pups were expelled. If not, it could cause the mom a dangerous infection. Since you are so new to this, I would be taking her in to the vet to be checked out. The pups should be taken in between day 3-5 for their tails to be docked & dew claws removed. 3. If the pups are not getting enough to eat, one way you will know is that they will CRY. Of course, they will also cry if they are cold. They should be weighed often the first few days to be sure that they are gaining (and more importantly not losing) weight. 4. Pups should nurse regularly and snuggle together to keep warm. If mom pushes a pup away from the other could be a sign that something is not right with the pup. Keep an eye on moms teats, they can sometimes become engorged and/or infected. Also watch for signs of milk fever...that can be life threatening. Visit this website Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. It is the absolute best for any and all whelping information. Good luck to you and your friend and welcome to yorkie talk. I see you're in Omaha; so am I
