Microchip/Contract question I am not sure how to word this but I have a question. Does anyone microchip or have a microchip clause in their contracts? The reason I am asking is that I have heard of cases where someone has collected on a sick or deceased puppy that in reality was not the puppy that was originally sold to them. I know sometimes they are difficult to distinguish between and once they are gone from your home for a time it might be even more difficult. How do you know for sure that the puppy being brought back is the one you originally sold?

that's a good question and i dont really know how to answer that. only thing i can think of is that is where dna would fall into place... but you would have to have your dog's dna certified. so, other than that which may or may not work, i dont really know a good answer to this one....

I think a microchip would be a great way to prevent this. A few of the breeders I know have the pups microchiped before they leave for their new homes and even have bought scanners for themselves so the can read the chips (It can be pricey, a few hundred dollars). Then if the pups are chipped the breeders than can ask the vet to do a scan on the sick pup to make sure it is one from the breeders litters or scan the pup themselves if possible.

I think the microchip placed by a breeder is a good safeguard for this. Good idea

yeah, i think you're right kim. micro chip by the breeder is the best way to solve the prob. but some people may not be able to afford all that is involved. i persoanlly dont micro chip my puppies but i do have my adults chipped now. it took me a while to get them all done. i was down to 3 and week before last, i got the last one done. i've heard alot of controversy lately about the micro chip vs. tattoos and i even started a thread about it few days ago and didnt get alot of replies...anyhoo, i'm for the chip even though the tattoo is visable by the naked eye, i just dont want to look at ugly green numbers or words on my babies...just me, and tattoos are fine. just a personal pref.

YT Addict | How much does it cost to have it done? What is involved? I know my Princess was microchipped when i bought her and i have her number wrote down . Thats all I know about it. I am thinking of having all the rest of my babies microchipped.Princess is also DNA tested. Guess i need to get with the program.I haven't had any of this done, but I haven't been breeding for long either. |

it cost me 38.00 per dog to have them chipped at my vet. then it costs 12.50 each through the akc companion animal micro chip program to have them registered and put in the data base. (one time fee for life time of your pet) once registered through akc companion you get stickers with the micro chip number and a yellow rubber tag for your pet's collar with the chip # and 1-800 number for recovery incase someone were to find your pet. it's a good program. it is expsensive if you have multiple dogs like i do, which is why it has taken me soooo long to get them all done....

This is a great question. I think microchipping is a good way to avoid those kind of scams. I havent microchip Gucci yet but im seriously considering it.

| Never would have thought about this aspect of microchipping. What a good idea to prevent fraud! I would think that a small fee of about $50 a puppy is a small amount, to prevent this, I think it's a good idea. I don't really think that you need to buy the scanner yourself though...

Wow, that is expensive. At the Humane Society they will microchip your pet for a fee of $10. Then for a lifetime membership in Avid's database that will cover up to 8 pets, (you an add, delete, etc) it is a $40 one time fee. Both my boys and my cat were microchipped total $10 each for $30 and a $40 fee for membership = grand total for three pets = $70. Any of you that are interested should check with your local humane society. Much cheaper and they are great folks there. I had all three of my animals fixed there for less than a thrid of the price at a private vet, no problems, recuperation was a breeze.

Thank you all for your input. Yorkiegal do you mean to add $50 to the price of the pups? I have found a place that does them for $32 and if you sign up with them as a breeder they take $5 off each chip. I would go to the Humane Society but in my town they only do this on special occasions and I don't recall the price, but it was reasonable and did include registering in the Home Again database for life. I too feel it is worth it... especially to the person who avoids getting scammed. Diana
