Spaying a 5 weeks pregnant mom Hi All, I am very concerned about my baby. She might be 5 weeks pregnant but she weights only 4 lbs. I didn't know that she was too small to bred and didn't know that I might put her in danger. Does anyone one know if it is too late to spay her now??? I really don't want anything bad happen to her...... Thanks. Last edited by centrumtablets; 12-16-2008 at 10:23 PM.

I wouldnt recommend it. But you should talk to your vet asap!!! See what he says about it. If he cant, get prepared and get the vet prepared in advance for any complications that might happen(c-section etc) best of luck

I also would not recommend it. don't panic just yet. Lots of four pound girls have babies just fine. I would never breed onee at that weight knowing what I know now. but in the beginning, I didn't know any better. Be prepared for a c-section. Let your vet know when she is due so he can be on standby. Then have her spayed so this won't happen again.

What the above posters said but also don't panic. When I was breeding I knew a woman who bred a 3 pounder and whelped puppies just fine. IMO she was a moron who cared nothing about her dog. Just make sure you have a vet or emergncy clinic who you can go to if she delivers on a Sunday or holiday. Good luck

She might be fine but just keep a careful eye on her when it gets closer. I have 4.5 lb moms that do great. How big was the male she was bred to? On another note I have had a dog spayed before when she was a couple weeks pregnant and it didn't hurt her, but not 5 weeks. With her the only thing she struggled with was depression. Her hormones were all out of whack and I guess to her it was like she "lost" the puppies, so she was really sad for a week or so...but she's fine now. Talk to your vet and see what he/she says, that would be the best route.

Thanks for all the answers. The male is about the same size but with a little bit longer legs. I will get a vet and do an ultrasound or x-ray to see how big the babies will be. My Vet said the ultrasound cost around $250 and the X-ray cost $150 on top of the $60 visitation fee. Are these price within the range. I am from NY. Is it true that pregnant dogs will shred their chest hair??? How do we measure a dog's temperature??? I know I need to do a lot of readings and hopefully..I will be ready when the time comes. Thanks again.

| Don't waste your money on doing an ultrasound or xrays yet... it's too early. I usually have mine xrayed at around one week before the whelpping date any earlier I have found I don't get an honest reading. Like everyone has said keep an eye on her and talk to your vet, explain your worries and fears to him/her and ask it the are comfortable doing a c-section if one is needed.
