| Help with inexperienced stud??? Hi there again! I had a question about helping a male to breed, he is interested in my female and she is standing for him... except. he keeps trying to mount her head!? i've tried holding him and he is uninterested in her hind quarters, i've tried holding her and if i hold her to where he can't get to her face he throws a fit, or if he does pay attention to her down stairs all he does is lick it??? i dont know what else i can do as he doesn't know where to put it?? anything you can do to help me would be greatly appreciated. |

| How old is your stud? Sounds to me like he is to young to know whats going on.

| This is a common problem with first time breeders. Many males get over anxious and mount the wrong end. He will eventually figure it out. Your next problem after getting him on the right end will be getting him to tie her. In reality, most breeders have a backup stud. When I have a male that is not experienced I will work with him for a few days in an attempt to let him breed a female but if after a few days he has not succeeded I will just breed the female with an experienced male. It is also possible for the male to have an outside tie and the female can still get pregnant. When I first started breeding Yorkies my male was only able to achieve outside ties but he eventually got the hang of it. How big is the male you are using? I really recommend the male be at least a year old before using them for breeding, especially if the male is on the small side. |

| My male is 2 and half years old and he is 4.5 lbs, she is little under 6.5 lbs. they are in a pen in the living room and she stands for him, they are a good height for each other so it doesnt seem an issue that he is too short... it is just when he goes to mount her he starts on her side while she stands for him but rather than swinging to her rear he completely swings to her face and grabs hold of her neck! there have been so many instances where he is standing from behind because she moves and he is behind her but he doesnt do anything he just wiggles and side steps to her head |

| What day of the heat cycle is it for your female? I really recommend not leave him in with her for very long. I would separate them and only allow him to mount her if you are there holding the female. When I breed mine I will either sit on the floor and hold the female from the front or I will put an old bed spread on my bed and sit on the bed and work with them. The male will wear himself out if you leave them alone for too long. I will usually just work with mine for about 30 minutes and if I have no success I will put them up and try again later. |

| Well, don't feel alone. I have know many other have had the same problem. I know many breeders just use artificial insemination for that very reason. All I can advise is to keep trying or find another male. Best of luck. |

| Even though most females are ready on day 9, maybe she isn't. My boy knows what to do and has fathered many litters, but when my girls are not quite there yet he even mounts their heads and their sides. When they are ready, he know exactly what end is the right one. If you feel she is ready you will have to get help, one person holds her the other him and then you might have to guide him. Good luck!
