Whelping area I need suggestions and/or pics on whelping boxes/cages. I have a pretty good size cage and was thinking about putting in a box half the size of the cage with a doggie door so mommy can get in and out. Can't really give her free roam of the house. My house is on the market and would like to keep them confined, yet safe, but at the same time...give mommy some space for herself when she wants a break. I work full time, but somebody is home at all times to take her out and give her several breaks from cage. Sorry this is so long, really need help in figuring out what to do. Thanks!! Appreciate any suggestions and or pics.

| I would suggest a big cage or xpen with a plastic box for her to have the puppies in. Here is Destiny's whelping pen right before she had the puppies. I use an xpen to keep it enclosed. She has her box, pads, food, toys, and her own bed (not shown in this picture) in the pen. The box is one of those plastic storage bins that fit under your bed and then I just add sheets and blankets. Sheets and pads until she is done delivering. It makes it super easy to clean out. I leave the one end of the pen open a little bit when I am here so she can leave the pen when she wants but when I am gone it is shut the whole way so no one else can get in. It works great, it gives her plenty of room and she is very happy with it. And she loves having her own bed in the pen besides the box so she can get away from the pups but still be near.

I'm in the same spot as you...our house is on the market and I wanted a nice and neat whelping area for Molly. We made her area in our bedroom, which is on carpet, so we bought a piece of the thin, flexible white plastic that is used for shower walls...we cut this to fit under her playpen so the carpet is protected. This is not the shiney stuff that comes in a kit...it's a single piece kept in the panelling area that was about $15.00. We use the 6 panel plastic play yard for her and the puppies and it's plenty big enough for her tote, bed, potty pads, food and water. We bought a large tote with a lid, my husband cut a door in the side for her to come and go but up from the bottom enough that the puppies can't get out until they are older. We covered the bottom edge of the opening with a fleece blanket so Molly could rest her head there, which she does when she nurses...and so it wouldn't feel sharp on the bellies of the puppies when they start crawling out. My husband drilled a small hole in the corner on each side of the tote just a couple inches above the floor and then put dowel rods through them from one side of the box to the other. This creates 'puppy rails' around the inside edge of the tote so the new Mommy can't lay on and smother a puppy. I put a heating pad on one end of the box, under washable potty pad, and I keep it on warm or low when Molly isn't in the box with her boys. I also keep Molly's food and water, disposable potty pads and a bed for her inside the playpen but outside of the box so she can get away when she needs to. When Molly started having her puppies we covered the bottom of the tote with disposable potty pads...we replaced the top pad after each pup so she had a clean area for whelping. This all worked quite well for us, it's easy to clean, looks neat and tidy and it protects the carpet. When she is done with the whelping box we can just disinfect it and store it out of the way. When the boys get a little older we will bring them into the living room and use the same set up, minus the tote, for them there. Last edited by my2boyz; 12-07-2008 at 05:39 AM.

Thanks ya'll. Alot of great suggestions and pics. I have decided to go w/the big cage and put my plastic storage box inside for the puppies. I will keep them in my bedroom since it is the warmest room in the house. But will have somebody home at all times when a buyer wants to look at my house. That was another concern of mine....somebody looking at my house and stealing one of my babies. We all can never be too safe when it comes to our pets. Thanks again~

Good luck I like having a rim on the inside of the box so if the puppies need to move away from the mother when she is laying down they don't get squashed, so they can scoot under neath the rim.
