| 6 wks-tiny Fmle; doesn't want to eat-need help!!! Hi, I have been weaning the puppies for about a week now and the little girl (Jinny) is not interested in eating what I'm giving all of them, and she is not gaining much weight. The mom will not nurse them anymore. At week four, she decided she was done and we had to make her feed them. I have to really watch Jinny because she gets lethargic and shaky easy. I have bought PuppyCal and I give that to her and also try to get as much of the Just Born milk replacer in her as quickly as possible by using the bottle. I have tried: 1. ground up the dry kibble and giving water along with it. 2. ground up dry kibble, along with Just Born Milk Replacer to make it soupy. 3. bottle feeding her just the Just Born Milk Replacer with 3 different types of nipples. Her and her brothers have had a taste (fingertip) of the Whelping Pudding that we gave the mommy. And all of them really liked that, but who wouldn't? The recipe is the one with the small box of Vanilla Cook-n-Serve Pudding, 2 beaten egg yolks, 2 cups whole milk and 1/4 cup sugar. I found another Puppy Formula that is 1 oz Similac, 1 oz water, 1 egg yolk, 1 Tblsp white Karo syrup. I have not tried this though as I wanted to ask all of you. This recipe came from my mother and it may be 30-40 years old also. Is there anything else that you could recommend I should try? Also, I think I read somewhere on here about not ever giving puppies the white part of an egg. Is this true? And is it just for puppies? Or for older dogs also, I think I've heard of people making their dogs scrambled egg for breakfast? I have only given my dogs Science Diet dry, Science Diet Canned puppy food (not canned for the new puppies); and treats like the Vita-Life(?) chicken chips in which the only ingredient is chicken. Just so you know that we don't give our animals any people food/scraps. Any insight you can give is much appreciated. Thanks so much! WOW! I didn't realize I wrote so much - - sorry it's so long, I didn't mean to write a book!

| I am so sorry you little one is having so much problems. It is sad that the mother quit feeding them so young, I have never had one to do that. Is the mothers milk completely dried up? What kind of dry food are you grinding up. I feel that Science Diet is a very poor quality food. You might try a better quality food like Canidae or Chicken Soup puppy. Are the litter mates all eating well? Does this little puppy look too thin? It is possible she is having problems with hypoglycemia and that could be effecting her appetite. I would not give a puppy that age anything but the ground up kibble and the milk formula. The recipe you listed sounds like it would be okay. I get concerned about giving a puppy that small to many different things. I do recommend Pet-tinic or Nutri-drops instead of the supplements like Nutri-cal. I would definitely leave down the finely ground dry food along with some water. My only other concern is that she could possibly have a liver problem and the lack of appetite and shakiness could be caused from that. If she does not perk up pretty soon then I recommend you get her checked by the vet. I pray this little girl does well. |

| Hi bjh: Yes, the mommy's milk has dried up. I have been grinding up the Science Diet which is what we use on all our dogs. And Science Diet being poor quality - Really? I have never heard that before. What's the difference between Science Diet and Canidae and Chicken Soup Puppy? Do they have larger amounts of carbohydrates and protein than than Scient Diet? I am willing to change to anything that would be better for my animals. My mother used Science Diet growing up and now me. I have always heard good things about it. But perhaps things have changed? The other litter mates are eating well, and she doesn't look too thin. She doesn't have a belly on her like her littermates but you can't feel any bones anywhere on her. Perhaps she may be eating more than I think she is? Do you know how much (in cc's) she should be eating at this point? I have recently moved them from the whelping area in the back of the house to right next to me. That way I can better keep tabs on playing, eating, etc. Last Wednesday, she was 6 wks and weighed 22.2 oz - how is that for her weight? The Pet-tinic or Nutri-drops - Is that stocked at at PetSmart, WalMart or Vet? What about the Canidae or Chicken Soup Puppy - Vet or PetSmart? As far as Hypoglycemia, it seems that she may have the "transient juvenile" because her shivering, her milk teeth came in before the other two and came in with a vengeance! Also, if she goes over 2 1/2 eating, she seems lethargic, but as soon as I feed her, she perks right up. Even if it's a couple of licks of the food, she will perk right up. We have all three in sweater socks and still use a heating pad. As long as she's warm, not over-handled, and has eaten within 2 hours, she's fine. She doesn't have a wobbly gait, drooling or lifeless. Her gums have been light pink when she shivers/lethargic but never gray or white in color. I hope I've answered all of your questions and gave you more insight to try to figure this out. I tried! And thank you for helping me with this little girl.

| 22 oz is not super small for a six week old puppy. Also when they start to eat on their own they don't gain as quickly as when they are nursing. I would keep dry ground food out for her all the time and monitor her daily. Also try to make sure you check to see how much she is eating. It is fine to also supplement her with milk replacer if mom has stopped nursing but if she is getting a lot of milk she probably won't be as inclined to eat as much on her own |

| I don't know which type of Science Diet you are feeding but here it a link to PetFoodAnalysis.com that expains about some the the ingredients in the Science Diet. It just has too much grain and not enough quality protein. Dog Food Reviews - Science Diet Nature's Best Puppy Original (Archived) - Powered by ReviewPost Like the above poster stated, you puppy is not especially small so she may be getting enough food. I would continue to leave out the finely ground dry food but a couple times a day offer her some fresh gruel made from the milk formula and a little of the ground food mixed in. Also, canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food is also good to mix with the ground up puppy food. I would use just enough to make the ground meal a little moist. How are her bowel movement? If she is getting constipated then that would cause her to get shakey and not want to eat. You can get the puppy vitamin drops from your vet. I think most vets carry them. You can do a google search for 'Canidae dog food' or 'Chicken soup dog food' and go to their website and find a retailer. These food are not sold at pet stores. Solid Gold Wee Bits is a good food for puppies, I think it is sold at Petco stores. When do you plan on getting your puppies their first shots? You definitely need to wait a few weeks before doing that. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. |

| You could try royal Canin puppy 33 ( I think). It has really tiny bites. If she won't eat you could mix chicken baby food in with it or canidae wet food to see if she likes that. You'll just have to hand feed her 4 times a day and make sure she eats a good meal before bed. The shaking is the start of the low blood sugar and you don't want that to go any further. Like someone else said , don't give her a vaccine until she snaps out of it and is eating well on her own. Science diet is very low on the list of good foods. |

| We are currently using Canin puppy 33. I get really hot water and let it soak up for about 10-15 minutes. Then I use a fork and mash it up. I wait till it's still warm, but NOT hot. My babies LOVE it. Later on on in the next few weeks we'll mix in some Canidae dog food- our past puppies have really enjoyed it. For my pickiest eaters I've given them warm Goats Milk. You can buy at the grocery store, I bet she will really like it. It's very close to her Mommy's milk too. Good Luck
