| Question on clipping tails My husband and I would like to buy a yorkie puppy. We have been doing a lot of research and this is the kind of dog we are looking to add to our family. My question is, is it necessary to clip the ears and the tail? Are there breeders out there that would refrain from clipping if we asked ahead of time, I realize this is done when they are born. Thank you! |

| They do not clip Yorkie ears. Tails are usually docked around 3 days old. I have seen Yorkies with tails but it is standard to have them docked so most breeders will dock them. You would probably have to prepay for a puppy to get them not to dock the tail. Then what if you decided you didn't want the puppy? |

Yeah, what she said... Also I have seen some who clip the tails way too short, so they hardly have any tail at all. My pups are clipped so they are longer than that, but not too long. If you look at the show dogs they have tails you can actually see, which is as it should be. Biewers, on the other hand do not have their tails clipped.

| clipping This is a question we run into every once in a while.... I'll give you an idea of how we deal with this issue... When we have a litter from which we are not evaluating any puppies, we allow buyers to choose if they would like to keep their puppy's tail intact. That said, the buyer has to have gone completely through our approval process and paid the total fee for the puppy prior to three days old, as well as signing a contract specific to that puppy / situation. Generally, we allow buyers to purchase a puppy or place their deposit on hold for the next litter if they wish. So, once this route is chosen, a buyer cannot do that. Most breeders will be happy to do things a bit different for each individual buyer. I do not think it is an unreasonable request, but do note that any special request often requires a bit more understanding and patience on both the buyer and breeder's part. |

| Thank you for replying and answering my question. I am new to this I have never done a forum before. I do have another question if you don't mind? We are interested in the smaller sized Yorkie 3.5-4 lbs. I know the breeder can not tell us what size he will be but do they breed for smaller dogs in the range? I'm sorry I did some research but some of the questions I have I can not find. Thank you!! |

| YTCA recommends that yorkies are bred to be within the 4 -7 range for health purposes. Members are therefore not allowed to use any terminology (teacup, micro mini, tinies, etc.) that encourages or refers to the breeding for smaller dogs. Therefore most reputable breeders are not breeding to create undersized yorkies but they do pop up sometimes.

| Thank you for getting back to me. You have been so helpful and we appreciate that very much. We aren't just getting a dog and we want to do this right. We have never had a dog before although I grew up with a lab. So we want to take dog classes. Have any recommendations for the McKinney area? We also have to find a breeder. Maybe we should start there first. Sorry we are a little excited! |

| I love to see potential yorkie owners doing their homework, good for you! You might start with the YTCA website or infodog.com to see if you can find a local show. Your local kennel club should be able to help you with classes and you can get to know other new puppy owners in your area. Who knows you could even set up play dates. I really enjoyed puppy class when I got my first pet yorkie, it was great socialization for both of us.

| You can contact Ella Patterson. I believe she is still the breeder referral for the Bluebonnet Yorkshire Terrier Club in Dallas. She's a very nice lady and can point you in the right direction. Her # is 817 485-0551. Remember most reputable breeders sell on a limited registration which simply means the puppy will have to be spayed or neutered and not used for breeding purposes. Good luck in your search!
