| First time breeding.... Hi, My little girl Molly is 2 yrs old and last month had her third heat. I decided to breed her after tons of research. She weighs 5.2 pounds and the Sire weighs a whooping 4 pounds. On day 7 of her heat she started showing signs of interest by moving her tail aside. The Stud came over and they showed real interest. He mounted Molly and got into her but did not tie. He was on her for approximately 1 minute from start to finish. They did this a couple more times then I separated them. I continued this for four days, days 8,9,10, and 11. I'm not sure if she is pregnant. I called my vet on 10/29/ 08 and he said that I would not be able to tell for 2 - 3 more weeks. The 10/29 was day 21 after her last mating with the stud. I'm not sure what I should be looking for pertaining to signs of pregnancy. I read on a website that dams can have morning sickness, but unsure if that is true. I will say that Molly vomited every morning for a week after mating. But nothing since. She does appear to be slightly heavier then she was but not much. Also when I turn her on her back and rub her belly I can feel small fluttering movements but not sure if this is puppy movement or if it is her normal bowel activity. How far along into her pregnancy can the vet xray and tell if she is carrying or not? If she is pregnant what signs should I see at this point. She does seem to sleep alot mre and seems less active. Today 11/8/08 is day 31 since her late mating with Harley. Please help, totally confused... Gloria: Mother of 6 Yorkies and 1 Maltese

Senior Yorkie Talker | My yorkie book says "there are subtle signs that she is pregnant:she may be quieter than usual, her teats may increase in size, she may have a colourless discharge after 2-3 weeks. The period of gestation varies from 60-63 days" the book also says that heads can be detected between the 21st and 28th day and a veterinary blood test will detect pregnancy.Maybe go and see a different vet,it's important to know because you have to increase the amount of food you feed the mom dog.

| I wasn't sure about my Molly at first either...they only tied one time and she had no morning sickness so I thought she didn't take. Well, as time went on she slowed down a bit, quit playing with the others so hard, got more lovable and started gaining a little weight. A couple of weeks ago it became very obvious...she's been rather round for the last 10 to 14 days, her appetite is bigger and she's constantly right next to me. I'm taking her to the vet next week for an x-ray to see how many puppies are in there...she's due the 21st but I know that can go a few days either way. |

| Thank you for the advice and info. I thought maybe she should have more food or at least a richer one that would give her the nutrients she needs for the pregnancy. She does seem to be a bit quieter and she seems to be taking more naps then usual. I want to make sure that I do everything right for her

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. This is my favorite website for information on everything from heat cycles, mating, pregnancy info, and whelping, all the way through weaning the pups. If your girl is only on day 31 since mating, she is still VERY early in her pregnancy and it will still be hard to tell, though signs are enlarged teats & her vulva will still be swollen. Morning sickness is a sign (mine had it for a week or so the first week after mating), but not all females experiance this. A vet or experianced breeder would be able at this point to palpitate her belly and possibly feel pups, but this should be done by someone who knows how to do it. X-rays are not done until about a week before she is due to whelp as the puppies bones are not calcified enough this early to show up on the xray. If you even suspect that she is PG, yes, you should be feeding her a high quality PUPPY food.....as much as she wants to eat. Good luck and please keep us posted on whether she is pregnant.....or not.

| I know that he entered her bet they did not stay tied together for a long period. At the most I would say it didn't last more then a minute.
