| Advice about uninterested breeding pair Hi everybody, I am new here and somewhat new to breeding (although I've talked to two vets and read up quite a bit) and have a some questions from experienced members here. My yorkie baby is 3 years old and his weight fluctuates between 4 to 4.5 lbs. I have never bred him before as I felt I was not prepared for the responsibilities last year. This year however, my friend's yorkie girl turned 2 and got her second heat and we'd really like to breed her. We've followed all of the vets' advice as well as advice online and reading materials. According to my friend, the dam started her heat cycle 8 days ago. Her vulva is pretty swollen, but I cannot really see any discharge except slight urine perhaps. The problem is that neither one seems to really care about mating. From all that I have seen, read and heard---males are uncontrollable around females in heat. However my boy just seems to lick her nether regions and smell it every now and then (she reciprocates in the same manner). He has not even as much as try to mount her and she doesnt seem to care. This is just really odd because our vets found them to be perfectly healthy, fertile and at the right age maturity to breed. Please advise as to what can be done. TIA ! |

| Its possible that you are too early. I dont breed mine until the 9th day and sometimes the female is not ready yet so I have to wait until she is. Also, are you bringing the female to your house? Her owner needs to leave her with you as sometimes the owner of the bitch is a major distraction. Make sure your male and the bitch are shaved in their private areas as well. Does the girl "flag" her tail when being sniffed by your male? That is a good indication that she is ready to breed. The girl could also be tested by a vet to see if she is ovulating as well.

| It's just too early, I breed days 10, 12 and 14. Don't leave them alone together, always supervise a breeding to ensure your males safety. |

| It is possible he will be one of those males that just does not show interest in breeding. It happens more than people realize. Your only hope might be to find a experienced male or ask the vet about doing an AI. |

| Try grabbing the female under her belly and slightly wiggling her bottom for him. It may intise him to mount. Becuase he is inexperienced try placing him on her back and praising him if he stays on. Don't be forceful, if he pulls away let go and leave him be. Make sure the 2 are separated between breedings. If they get accustomed to each other the male will lose interest. She has to be kept away from him unless they are going to do the deed. Another thing is making sure your male is well excersized and nourished during this process. It will help his stamina during the act. If all else fails you may have to AI her. If they are both newbies you may have a hard time breeding them anyway. She will have another heat so don't get discouraged if it doesnt happen this time. PM me for more info.

| Thank you everyone for your help and words of encouragement. My boy finally did it (today's the 13th day of the baby girl's heat going by my friend's count). I was however a bit concerned. They were tied for just a few minutes. The stud tried leaving and I could see some of his male part when did that, but I restrained and comforted them both. Is that a problem ? Would she still take ? The successful breedings that I've seen at my acquaintances/friends with their toy breeds usually lasted between 10-12 minutes long. Also, the dam is now licking her vulva a lot, but is otherwise in a great playful mood. And should I try breeding them again tomorrow ? TIA ! Last edited by gatteaux; 11-12-2008 at 07:28 PM. |

| We generally have timed our breedings.. and I am saying 20 minutes is about what it has been.. Also it is so important to make sure both are held so one does not try to get away.. very dangerous as I am sure you have read... let them rest a day in between breedings.. is what I generally do also..I will watch for updates.. anne |
