| How much does your vet charge? Hi all. I am starting to do my deep research into breeding and costs. I have asked my vet how much certain things cost and this is the prices I got. I was wondering if it was way more than most pay or about the right price. C-section is 200.00 Dock Tail and remove Dew Claws is 33.00 for first pup and 8.00 for all other pups. What other vet costs should I ask for prices for and how do these prices sound to you all? |

| sounds about right. some vet's charge and office call for the whole litter, then a per-tail charge for the docking. (dewclaws are usually included).

| If I was quoted $200 for a c-section...I would be asking what they aren't doing that they should be. They have to be cutting corners or they are losing a ton of money. We have a great working relationship with 2 veterinarians that are on call for us 24/7...if one is out of town we have a back up...but we know in detail their procedure, the medications they use, the precautions they take and how they are monitored during a c-section. We pay on average $1000 for a c-section. Some other costs you are going to want to know are x-rays, ultrasounds, puppy check-ups and vaccines to scratch the surface. These are all costs that will accumulate fast and are expected costs...there can be several unexpected costs as well, those are tougher to prepare for because you never know what they will be. Seems you are headed in the right direction...researching first.

| We are now using a rural vet that has great prices and so far they seem to do a great job too. They are located in the town time forgot and I hope no one brings them up to date.... Vaccinations and checkup 28. teeth cleaning 48. spay 75.00 Makes one wonder why just 40 miles away a visit is 200. |

| I work with three different vets, my regular one in the day time a c-section is about 300.00 but he gives me a 25% discount as we have been friends for a long time. My back-up vet , which I had to use just two weeks ago the section was $501.00 and only one puppy. The costs go up for more puppies. And my after hour vet who will get out of bed any night, a section runs about $600.00. But if you go to the emergency clinic here in town it can cost 2 to 3 thousand. Working with the three vets I am covered , no ER for me!!! I do my vaccines and tails and dew claws myself, I do not do mommy check ups, and I do not take my puppies to a vets office where they can catch anything. If you are new to breeding , you can plan on being at the vets a lot. |

| Ok, so sounds like it's a great price! Wow, some of you all live in pricey areas, eh? Yikers! The vet that I am using is the same vet I have always used. He is everyones favorite vet in the area....just a great guy. He always keeps his costs down because he has no overhead as he runs his practice on his property. I am very comfortable and confident with him...wouldn't want anyone else. Ok, I will also check on the other mentioned costs and factor that in as well. Thanks so much. Now, do most people use a male that is the same size or smaller than the female? I have found a stud that is a pound less than my female. |

| I don't think they would be loosing a ton of money if they don't charge $1,000.00 for a CSection, I watch my vet when he does them and they do not take a lot of time to do. Have you ever seen the mark up on the medicines etc that vets charge its unreal alot of times they charge so much more than a human DR. A bottle of meds that cost 5.00 they charge $29.95 etc etc.. Nutrical we all know its about $5 or less to order and the more you order the cheaper it is they charge $15.00 now at vets around here.. cheaper at Complete Pet Mart for $10.00. Vaccinations that they send the cards out yearly to remind you to come in for those even though the Vaccinations are not needed yearly and the standards have changed they still send out those darn cards, they don't tell you that over vaccination is actually killing your dogs immune systems because that makes up about 35% of their income.

| In Northwest NJ Bella's regular office visits are 54.50 (not including shots de-worming etc.), extended visits 75.00. She needed a small lump on her back aspirated and fluid analyzed 162.50, along with extended visit 75.00 and medical waste disposal 3.00, total 240.00. She will be going to get spayed in the next month or two, plus having 3 baby teeth removed. Afraid to ask Vet cost of these procedures. |

| Yes, I know! That's what I LOVE about my vet. We have 3 vets in the area and meds that cost 20 or 30 at the other two cost less than 5 at his clininc. Also, spaying/nuetering is less than half the cost. Yesterday when I was there he even GAVE me a bottle of Petzlife spray for my Yorkie! |

| Some of the less expensive spay/neuter clinics do not do three wall closures when they do surgeries, I did not know that and I was also shocked to know that they do not do the monitoring like they do at most regular vets. I was shocked when I heard this. I was also told that they line them up in a room with how many they are going to do that day which takes away from a sterile environment in my mind. Our local Spay/Neuter clinic has changed alot, they have a great new facility and they do have individual surgery rooms, an isolation rooms for parvo clients etc. My son works at this clinic and he worked there when they had the old facility, it is a wonderful new set up they have now. I do however use a different vet who I am very happy with and have used for years. I found him when he was on call and my regular vet was closed and I have never went back to our old vet after meeting this vet. He is more expensive but my trust and faith in his care means a great deal for me. He has another office and a great vet there and I have complete faith in her too, he would have never hired her after she interned with him if he did not have complete faith in her. So alot has to do with your experience with the vets, and its OK to change vets if you feel uncomfortable or concerned about their lack of care or over vaccinating. My vet and I can discuss things and work together and thats the most important relationship to have with your vet. One that respects your concerns and will listen to your thoughts and wishes. I just wished he still did ER calls. His office is open half a day on Saturdays then you have to us ER after that for the weekends. That is the one thing I do not like.

| Sounds way too less. Wow, 200.00 for a c-section! That is so cheap, makes me wonder. I have had two recently and the forst one was $558.00 during working daytime hours and not an emergency situation, but needed to be done. The second one was around 10:30 at night and was $785.00. And we know each other well, so I get a great discount. C-sections depend on the hour and reason - emergency situation by situation case. I have heard the normal after hour cost is normally 1,000. It is a good thing that you are researching now. I think you will find out that it is a lot more than one think to breed. You are also have to have extra cash after delivery for mom alone - many times they need check after delivery = office visit, x-rays afterwards in some cases, medication, etc... My last delivey was normal delivery, but she had still some of the afterbirth still inside and we could not get it to come out. So we had to take her in to get checked - oxy shot needed and perscription for Amoxi, and an x-ray to make sure there was not another pup caught in the way - reason afterbirth was not coming out. All that was extra cost. When we had the c-sections, my first girl got am infection and was running a fever - so we had to take her in to get rechecked=another office visit and amoxi. perscription and fluids - 128.00. She also would not eat on her own and I had to stay home and hand feed her all around the clock. The 2nd c-section - we had one pup that would not suck on her own and had to take her back to the vet twice with bottle feeding and then tube feeding her around the clock every hour or two hours. We lost her after 5 days. So breeding is very costly and time consuming. Not everyone knows this when they get into it. Most just jump feet first and learn as they go. I would not recommend this. | Sometimes you are quoted a price then when they breakdown the bill it is not what you thought because they didn't add in everything in the price they told you. My sister in law paid $350 on dental she was quoted $200 but each tooth extracted cost more, pain shot etc etc..I think vets should always give you the Collar for the necks *can't remember what they call them right now LOL* Because so many dogs dig out the stitches, as cheap as you can order those you would think a vet would GIVE them out to any surgery patient to protect that patient but then again IF they come back in thats more money the vet can collect to redo/repair the problem.

| Wow!! $200 for a C - section is great!! The last two I had done were a lot more than that. The after hours one at my back up vet was nearly $800 and the one I had done at my regular vet during office hours was about $400 and I thought that was a deal! If you are trying to breed to make money you may want to reconsider. Even with those low prices there are always unexpected expenses.
