| My Molly is Due Sept. 23rd-I have Questions! I am reposting this because I have not yet gotten any response - I thought if it had a different title it might help. So, this is my first - and my Molly's first litter. My sister is a breeder and is coming to town to help me - but just in case Molly goes early or something I wanted to get connected in here. I have been reading all the posts and this is a great and helpful community! My first question will be about calcium and milk fever. One of my sister's dogs almost died from it so it has me worried. Do you feed calcium before pups - after - how much etc.? The other thing that freaks me out is how many pupps and moms in here sound like they are dying or having serious complications! I read somewhere that 25% of pupps die - and I know there is a risk to the mom. Are there some of you out there that don't have all this death going on? What is in your whelping kit - I read lists online, but thought I would get some info from some actual people As far as due dates - I witnessed the first tie on July 21st - I left my male and female together throughout her heat cycle - and I did see them attempting to breed up to three days prior - but they weren't tying - so I assumed she just wasn't quite ready - so, I suppose there is a slight chance that they could have tied a few days earlier than the first time I saw them - I do work... what do you think the closest guess as to due date would be? Lastly, the temperature thing. I started taking the temp yesterday as my sis said the earliest she could deliver is around Sept 16th - since you are supposed to start a week early - I went ahead and did - although 2 weeks of temps 2 times a day seems a bit much. Anyway, she is running about 99.5 both mornings, and 100.5 both evenings. Is that normal - and how big is the drop. Thanks in advance everyone! |

| Good plan...it's always best to have an experienced breeder with you the first time (at least). Quote:

scissors--for cutting cords, not sharp, I use child's scissors something to tie off the cords--plain dental floss, clamps, etc alcohol--to sterilize as needed, like the scissors, etc mucus bulb--for clearing the airways stethoscope LOTS of towels that you don't mind seeing ruined--chances are promising that you will NEVER get them clean A few other things I always have on hand, baby wash-I used this to wash at least the mom's hindquarters after whelp and after pups have fed. IMO, keeping all of that "stuff" on her can only attract bacteria and just, well, EWWW! Make sure that she is completely dry before putting her back with the pups heating pad--if you are going to use it to regulate temp artificial formula--in the rare case that you may have to supplement the pups I'm sure there is more, but that's all I can think of right now. | my first litter too I just had my first litter 9/10 2 boys 4 oz and 3 3/4 oz. I was a nervous reck. I also found this site very helpful too. i took temp about 2 weeks before whelping and had the same as yours does. The day before the drop she peeked a temp at 101.5 and then 3am on 9/9 it went down to about 99 and by 8am it was 98.5 and stayed all day. They say on this site 12-24 hours before whelping well Felicity went 26 hours. Whelped 30 before i was to take her into the vet. I called the vet at 8am when she started to push and pups were very high up yet . which i was so nervous that they would not come out because she was only 4.5 lbs pre preg. after 1 hour i called vet again. She told me to butt out and get out of the room, close the blinds and just check on her every 10 to 20 min that she needs to relax to get them out and not to worry that nature will take over and she will do EVERYTHING. I checked every 15 and then when i checked on her at 10:05 a pup was out and she was licking it in the sack and I was so scared and broke the sack with the aspirator bulb then suctioned the nose and mouth and screamed for my friend that was waiting with me that was down stairs. she comes running up, I was shaking and the pup was fine. She calmed me down and said "Just let her do it, she needs to bond" well let me tell you she was and is such a great mom and did everything on her on and cut the cord and ate the placenta and cleaned them. i was so glad to have my friend there to calm me down and when the 2nd came i was so much better and just did what i did for the first. But i do believe that by me leaving the room and just checking in and only interfering when needed made her push them out. I have no experience and learned a lot from this and would do it again. But not with the same stud(thats another really long story) if you want to read it .. it is posted under the Breeders Section under "IS This IT?" I will be thinking of you keep us posted. melissa a newbie too |
