| Update on Cali's babies and so many questions [Disclaimer: I have placed this message in "Breeder Talk"- not sure if this is the right section for this. Moderators: feel free to move it. ] First night and day with the new babies has been amazing. Cali is a great mom. She has not wanted to leave them for long. She goes outside to go "potty" and right back again. I have some questions and just know there are answers here... My home is a very busy place, so I chose my master bathroom for the actual whelping. It was quiet and safe for the mama. Last night I simply left her with her babies in the bathroom-adjacent to my bedroom. This morning she was nesting around under my bed and I just knew she would be moving them to where I couldn't reach them. So I took the entire basket (it's one of those plastic under bed storage boxes-sans the lid) and laid it just under my bed but right at the edge so I can reach in, check on babies. She is VERY content there with the babies and they are within arms distance of me. Mom will just not eat herself unless I put food on my finger. She got used to be handfed towards end of pregnancy, now wants to be handfed more. She seems to still be panting a lot-maybe too warm? I keep my house set at 76 all the time but have the box where there are no drafts. She will drink water if I put some on my finger first. One of the babies is not latching on to the teat. Both puppies are up against her constantly, rooting, but I have not seen an actual latching. I read here to try saliva-will try that next. Mom did something really, really strange this afternoon! I was exhausted and needed to lay down. (As many of you know yesterday was just too much around her). Cali jumped up on the bed with me, as is her custom, and snuggled up to rest, too. As soon as she settled in, the pups started crying-so she jumped back down to the box. Few minutes later, she jumped back up to me. Again, pups cried-she jumped down. She repeated this a few more times. Just as I was about to doze off I hear one of the puppies crying loudly and looked. Cali had the puppy in her mouth and was about to bring the baby to bed with us! She figured if she couldn't lay with me without the baby crying, then she would just bring her baby along! I have never seen anything like this! So what did I do? I took my pillow and blanket and laid down on the floor next to the whelping box and fell asleep with one hand on Cali's head.... So-are the babies crying because they are hungry? Because they just want to be with mom? Will mom not be able to rest? Why would she bring that baby up on my bed?

| All of my gals enjoy being hand fed in bed the first couple of days as they don't want to leave their pups. Mom is their only source of warmth, their shiver reflex hasn't kicked in yet. I keep my gals and their pups in my bathroom the first two weeks. The way it is broken up there is a separate room for mom to potty in, she won't want to potty near her pups. The room is temperature controlled and I can hear the pups at night. It's far enough from the other dogs that mom can rest easy. It sounds like your gal is torn between her maturnal duties and her desire to be with you. You'll either have to put the whelping box on your bed, continue to sleep on the floor, or put her back in the bathroom so she won't feel the conflict so strongly. Weigh the pups regularly to make sure that they are gaining. As long as they are gaining they are nursing and are okay. Make sure that they are being diapered well and kept warm. Sounds like things are going fine.

| Make sure the momma is ok. Check her temperature and make sure she doesnt have an infection. Her not eating concerns me... She might not know what to do mother-wise. Some dogs dont mother the pups as well as others and you have to help them. |

| I had a female that never once slept with her puppies. They slept in a playpen at the end of my bed and my female slept with me. When the puppies cried she went to them until they were quiet, then back to bed with me. I tried to make her stay with her puppies, but finally put a heating pad in the puppies' bed and let my mom decide where she wanted to be.The puppies all gained weight and grew up just fine. I think your mom's sense of loyalty to you is being challenged, and she is doing the best she can. Keep feeding her by hand if necessary. Things should settle down in a few days. Best wishes.

| Second night better Cali stayed at the edge of my bed all night--and occassionally, I would reach down and lpat her head in reassurance...she never left her puppies. I weighed the puppies and they have already gained some weight. Apparently they are latching on when I'm not looking! My breeder friend looked them over and confirmed that they do not appear to be dehydrated or have any signs of distress. Mama is eating-IF I put the food in the box and hand feed her and/or just stay with her the whole time. Not that she isn't hungry. I think you are right on-she just doesn't want to leave the babies. Thanks again to all of you!

| Eyes aren't open yet Cali is an amazing mom. Puppies are so gorgeous! They are 14+ oz each and sweet as can be. I have some questions... 1) The eyes are not open yet. Today they are 16 days old. Should I be concerned? I'm thinking not...they will open when they open. 2) The momma and babies have been in my room since day one. They are definitely getting too big for their bed and I'm ready to move them to their new location. I am worried that this will cause momma stress. What is the best way to help with the transition. We built her a "condo" (that's what I call it). It has three separate rooms-a bed, a potty area and a play area. The thought was they could spend their days in this area and allow room for growth. It's just that now I don't know when I should transfer them there......what is certain is that they are outgrowing the little bed in my room. Thanks for your input! I can always count on you!

| condo... I needed a safe place for the puppies, and with the other dogs and busyness of this house, this was the best I could think. I had someone build it for me for under $80. (much less than anything you would find in a store or online). I can rest knowing they are safe. Here is one picture of the girl puppy...taken at one week.

| yup You are right on...they are chorkies. Dad is a full breed applehead, long haired chihuahua. She was supposed to breed with my yorkie, but the chi got her. I think they are just precious either way and she is an incredible mom.
