| Question about stud? I have been having problems with my male Bo. I contacted the breeder and no reply ( it's been about 2 mon. and 3 e-mails). First off he isn't ever really interested in any of my females when they are in heat, then when he does decide to try he finishes outside almost all the time. He has managed to give me three small litters, with my girl Lady he gave me 2 puppies, with Bitsy just one and now I just got back from the vet with Kylie and once again just one puppy in there. Lady is a good 6 lbs, Bitsy 4.5 lbs and Kylie 5.5 lbs. He's a small boy maybe 3 lbs. He is always thin as he is the pickiest eater I have. He will get me all excited when he eats his whole bowl of food one day but then the next day just picks at it, he is really thin. Before taking him in to get tests done, sperm count etc.. I thought I would ask here. Oh and he also tears like CRAZY his face is never ever dry and his face has a slight odor to it all the time. Well any advice would be greatly appreciated. Smiles, Myra |

| The bitch determines the size of the litter by the amount of eggs she produces that cycle. Sounds to me like you might be breeding too late when some the fertilized eggs have expired and he is not interested. Do progesterone levels to get an optimal breeding date, do one AI on that date, and then try a natural breeding 2 days after that. If you had a more reliable stud I would do 2 natural breedings and no AI but with his limitations I would want to be dure I got a good amount of sperm inserted on that best day for breeding and AI helps insure that. I would worry more about timing to get the most available eggs than I would worry about sperm quality if he is a young healthy boy. Not only can you increase litter size but you might increase your # of girl puppies as supposedly the "girl sperm" are faster travelers and will reach those ready to go eggs first. Using progesterone testing (two tests each at $60 per test) I have two litters now, one of three and one of six, total of 7 girls and 2 boys. |

| Sound very interesting. The thing is that he's around her everyday during the day when i am watching them and the females throw their rears at him and he doesn't even sniff lol. I just bred Lady to a friends lil guy to see if there's a difference. Bo was not interested at all and the other male attacked her as soon as she flagged him. On what days of heat would you recommend the progesterone testing be done? Do you think the strips offered at Revival work? Oh and what can I do to stop him from finishing outside? Thanks a bunch. | I test at day 6 and day 8, usually my day 8 results show that she ovulated that day and so I bred day 9 and 11 because the eggs have to ripen which takes 1-2 days. I might do another at day 13 if I have the stud available and some free time lol. Will he let you touch him? When he penetrates (can usually tell, my boy grabs on harder with front legs and thrusts faster) push him into her gently and hold him there. Also since he is small give him something to stand on so it is easier for him to penetrate and stay in versus slipping out. |

The only one of my boys who has been used for breeding will not breed a bitch too early. I swear he knows when they have ovulated. He has absolutely no interest in the bitches until they are, confirmed by the test, ready to be bred. And I totally agree with the suggestion of keeping them separated before the actual mating. Absence makes the heart (or whatever!) grow fonder!!!! My dogs are, for the most part, crated when I am not home in a single room. The exception to this is my Penny, who is totally spoiled and stays in the living room. When the girls that crate in the "dog room" are in season they are not nearly as exciting or attractive as Penny, who is kept in a different part of the house. She is the forbidden fruit I guess... | |

| Sounds like there is nothing physically wrong with your boy, he just isn't a good stud.

| A lot of the small boys need help/guide him so he doesn't finish outside, You are probably loosing quality sperm that way. Get on the floor and actually guide the boy in. And just like in humans, just because he is male doesn't automatically qualify him as a good stud Deana Prestigeous |
