Exclamation Need help!

Well not me but my half sister's friend bred her shi tzu. Although I have never bred or intend to breed I have learned alot of things here on YT. The dog is only 1 yr old and I told her she was way too young and the dad was 1 yr old too. They know nothing about breeding and I was so mad when my sis told me she bred her. I groomed her a few days ago and the girl asked me if I thought she was pregnant so I looked at her tummy and she looked pregnant so I said yes she could be but according to the dates she was rather small so I told her she might only have one pup or it can be a false pregnany. Well my sis calls me this morning and said that she had 1 puppy at 6 am this morning and hasn't had any other pups since.
Also the girls vet said it could take several days before she has another pup if she has more...is this true? Shouldn't she take her to the vet just to make sure that she's not having issues passing the next pup if indeed she has more pups?

Any info I can pass to her would be greatly appreciated. I already told her not to wait too long and have her vet examine her but I don't think she plans on taking her to the vet. This makes me so mad but at this point I have to stop being mad because whats done is done and I already let her have it the day I groomed her....I just need to know what else I can tell her. What can and cannot happen if she doesn't see a vet.

Hi-

If she had a pup at 6 am, she should have the others, if there are any within a couple hours. If she hasn't had any more, and you think there are others, she should go to the vet. Does the mom seem to be in distress or trying to push and nothing coming out, what is she doing? is the pup ok, and is it nursing?

Thanks for your feedback. My sister told me the pup is already nursing. She also told me that her friend pulled the pup out because the mom was screaming. My sis also told me that her friends vet said it could take up to 3 days for her to have the other one if she has anymore. I'm not a breeder but that doesn't sound right. I'm going to call to get a update.

They don't have one pup one day and another 3 days later. If the vet actually said that, I'd find another vet now. They have the pups the same day. Maybe she's only got one, if she's lucky. They pulled the pup out? They are lucky it wasn't injured.

Yes my sis said that her friend pulled the pup out and my sister told her that she wasn't suppose to do that. The pup is okay...thank goodness. I can't believe she bred her and not know nothing about breeding. Make me so mad that some people bred their dogs just because they want a "free puppy" basically in her case thats what it is.

My sis just spoke to her and she said that she's acting normal now, she's walking around and she is breathing normal and the puppy is feeding. Is there anything else she needs to look for or need to do? Should she take her to a vet anyway? Seems like she only had one...I was surprised due to her size..she's a big girl but then again she's young.

If she were mine, I'd take her just to be safe.

What would she have done if she had needed a c-section?

I asked that when I groomed her. I said I hope you're prepared for a c-section and she looked at me like I was crazy. My sis said the pup is big. She more than likely bred her with a big shi tzu. I just told my sis since she plans on keeping him she needs to get them both fixed because she cannot breed mother & son.

If there is another pup in there and she waits 3 days, the Mom will die! A dead pup inside her Uterus will cause an infection that will most certainly kill the female. That Vet needs to go back to school! If she refuses to take her to a new Vet, have her stand her up, and gently squeeze her tummy area to feel for more pups, should feel lumpy. A single pup is usually a big pup due to getting all the nutrients from Mom. Sometimes it is necessary to pull the pup, but there is a way to do that safely, which she probably didn't study for. Glad to hear the pup is alive. These kind of things drive me crazy. Now she can call herself a breeder....

A vet can do a quick x ray and they will know for sure then, but if she is not in labor and is acting settled in, and based on the size of the puppy, there probably was just 1. She should keep an eye out for any pus like discharge or smelly discharge that would indicate an infection that would result from a retained dead fetus.

There is no rule against pulling puppies out, I often have to help mine out, but the key is to pull with mom's contractions and to pull down, not straight out, as that is the path of the birth canal. And to try to grasp as much puppy as you can, try not to grap just the tootsies if possible. Another help is to take a syringe and attach a feeding tube, fill the syringe with KY jelly, wedge the tube in next to the puppy and squirt in the lubricant, can make delivery MUCH easier.

Newborn size generally is not dependant on the size of the sire. Puppies grown to fit the room that is available to him, thus why singletons can be huge. They can also be quite small as one of my girls had because he was located extremely high in the uterine horn and was growing deep in her chest where there was not much space for him. In a litter, my first puppy is usually the biggest, because of its location lower in the abdomen where they had more room to grow. I wish that was not the case because I'd rather have the smaller, easier whelps come first! I also see this on the xrays, the puppies further up in mom are generally smaller than the lower ones...
