Shade New to YT and Expecting Yorkie Puppies for the First Time

I've been a lurker for some time, but finally joined. I love animals...

I have 2 yorkies, a long hair apple head chihuhua, a black lab, miniature beagle and aussie. Yes, I love dogs. It wasn't until a little over a year ago that I got my first yorkie and I love her soooo much. Then a friend was moving and her male yorkie needed a home and of course, I couldn't resist. I thought I would mate them, but she is 4.6 pounds and he is 11 pounds (big boy), so I had him neutered. Well last month she went into heat and the male chihuahua mated with her! Looks like we are going to have chorkies. I am scared to death! My other dogs have all had puppies, but I've never assisted such a small girl. She is so petite. I am hoping to get some information and advice to help Cali through this time. She went to the vet today and will return on August 29th for x-rays. They put her on calcium supplements.

I have been reading about setting up whelping bed, getting heating pads, etc. I am trying to read as much as I can. In life, I am a nurse assistant. If I can help people, I'm sure I can help a dog. From what I've seen here, too, there are many of you who are well experienced.

I wasn't going to let her mate just yet-but she did. Now we are going to have babies. I'm happy.

In addition to the dogs, I also have 2 cats and 5 kids. I have the best job in the world!

You might want to pick up Canine Reproduction and Whelping by Myra Savant Harris. All of the reproductive specialists that I have ever confered with seem to agree that giving a calcium suppliment before whelping sets a gal up for eclampsia. Calcium is released from the bones by the parathyroid. The parathyroid can become lazy if something else is providing calium on a day to day basis. When the bitch needs the calcium for producing milk or for contracting curing labor the parathyroid has forgotten how to do it's job and no calcium is released. This results in insufficient contractions making a c-section necessary and eclampsia when nursing.
Please get this little gal fixed after this, she really is awfully small to be having pups.

Wow...sounds like you've got lots of homework to do and only a little time to do it in.

One thing I noticed was that you said she'd already been placed on calcium supplements. Not to second guess your vet, but I have always been under the impression that you shouldn't supplement calcium until AFTER she has whelped? Just something you might want to double check... (I see it has already been mentioned.)

I would not leave it up to your girl to have these pups on her own. It's not impossible, but it puts her at great risk when there is not someone there to monitor her progress and take note of any warning signs that she is having difficulty delivering. (Likewise, it is also very dangerous for both the male and female to be allowed to tie unsupervised!) I would at this point try to find an experienced breeder who would be willing to assist you during the whelp.

I think the most suggestion at this point would be to have your intact dogs spayed/neutered to prevent these "accidents." IMO, dogs shouldn't be allowed to 'just have puppies' for the fun of it.

Good Luck!

I do - but as a mom for 23 years- I have learned to learn! I'm not afraid to learn and to do whatever I have to do.

The vet had told me to start her 2 weeks prior to her due date. But from what I am hearing on this board, that is not right. Yes, I will double check.

I have found through the years, whether it's puppies or other family issues, that I always learn more from those with experience than anyone else. (I'll save that story for another time)

I do not plan to leave her alone. I have helped deliver black labs....not quite the same size, but puppies after all. I am also a CNA-bodily functions don't bother me. I am readying, studying, learning and not afraid to stay up all night to help my sweetie.

We did want to eventually have chorkies...but not for another year....I swear I tried everything to keep them apart. I even made an apron for myself and carried her around for two weeks while she was in heat so that the male couldn't get her. I left her with the older teens while I went to the store and what was done was done. The foster daughter just said..."I turned around and they were hooked"...........

I guess all this to say, I am not afraid to stick my hands in and do what has to be done. Thanks for your kind words and encouragement and concrete advice..
