Animal Smiley 049 Help!!

Okay so the babies are now 1 week and 2 days old and Peyton is trying to carry them upstairs now....but when we place them upstairs she seems out of place and nervous. When she picks them up she has them squealing as though it hurts. She grabs them in the middle (stomach area)... What do i do i dont want her to hurt them. And now they are crying as though they want her or their hungry something....But she doesnt want to be down stair with them. What do I do??

We have also placed the puppies with her and she wants to get up.

put her in a expen or crate so you can limit her getting out

mom's can be strange especially if they are spoiled to you

she has a gate up to her whelping area (walk-in closet) but we took it down for a little bit. So we should just leave it up right???

Default Help

Our Yorkie also want to carry her puppies around. We bought a pen and put it around the whelping box. We could let her in and out, but I think it made her feel more secure that no one could get to her puppies. Also we put the puppies in a crate with a top on it. The first few weeks, she did not like anyone even looking at her puppies. This also made her fee secure. She may be looking a new place where she feels that her puppies are safer.

First mistake you made was in not CONFINING that mother and the babies all in one small area. i know people have told you it is alright but it isn't. At this age, she should not be able to get more than a foot or two away from the babies except if you take her out to potty. get an x-pen or crate and put them in it. Put a whelping box ,which you should have already had, in one end of it and put a pee pad, her food and water down in the other end of it. This is as far as she needs to go. if she barks and seems miserable, so be it. These babies have to be taken care of. i just went thru the same thing wioth one of my mamaa's as far as not wanting to stay but I MADE her stay and at times, I even had to physically hold her down so the babies could nurse. She HAS to stay with the babies. You are moving them too much and this in itself iss upsetting her. The more you move them, the more she will move them.

First, they have been confined from the start we took the gate off to let her out for a little bit. We did place her back once she tried to take them out. And we tried moving them once. She was fine after we placed her back in she does whine but stays with them. We did have to hold her down once to let them feed. She is good now. I know what all she needs in her whelping area we have her whelping area in a big walk in closet. One side is where pee pads are one area has her food and water and the rest is where they lay. I have done everything by the book ever since she got pregnant and i let her out this one time so that she could come out but still be near the puppies and that is when she wanted to bring them out with her. She is good now feeding and leaving them in there as she is confine with them in her area.

I'm going to have to agree also. If she is just in a room with them and that space is more than 2 feet away ,she will want to get out and stay out more often sometimes. I have not had Lola carry her puppy since she has been confined to a Xpen and her whelp box is in there. It seems too early for your girl to leave them but every dog is different. Right now the xpen is about 2 feet X4 feet. So she has space to get out of the box and go to a pee pad area. I often find her right next to the basket just resting. She is not letting him nurse every few hours as he should be. So I have been supplementing half of the day.But Lucky turns 4 weeks old tomorrow so he's suppose to start getting weaned off his mommy...
If you notice your puppies not gaining enough ,I would get some Esbilac formula or you can get Goat's milk. I'm not sure if they are old enough to be getting a mixture of baby Gerber chicken mixed with ground up puppy food.

I'm so sorry you are going through this because I know how much we worry over this since the puppies are still so small. I still worry and Lucky is already 1 lb 8 oz! I still wake up at least 3 times a night just to check on him because I often find him out of the whelp basket sleeping on the pee pad!
It is amazing to see a 4 wk old crawling out of the basket to get to the pee pad to pee or poop!
Get the puppies and mom confined to a smaller area,if you have a playpen or Xpen, even better.

I am glad she is doing better for you. I made the mistake of letting my girl out one time and had to force her to spend time with them after that. i use an x-pen and that way the mama feels like she is part of the family bgecause she can see us and hear us.

When the puppies are a week old they are only going to nurse every few hours so it is natural that the mom will not want to be right with them all the time. If you have a female that is used to being with you all the time then it can be more challenging. Also, the momma's personality plays an important part in how you handle the situation. With my momma's, starting when the pups are about a week old, I let the momma in the living room with me and the other dogs. The pups are kept in the spare bedroom in their whelping box, which is setup in a big exercise pen. The mom will be perfectly content for a little while but she will let me know when she needs back in with her pups. Of course, it keeps me busy all day letting mom back and forth but she is happy and it does not bother me having to give her the extra attention. You just have to make sure the babies are in a safe place and just don't allow the momma to move them around. Good luck.

Yes thats what we were doing letting her with us and when she heard the pups crying she would check on them also when she has been away from them for a little while she would go back to them. But for now she is back to being confined in the room with them but in visible site of us.

It sounds like you are working it out. These mommas can work you to death. They are so spoiled. When my babies are about 4 weeks old I remove them from the whelping box and just put some bedding at one end of the x-pen and then their pee pads and food and water. I put a board across one end of the x-pen so mom can jump in and out of the x-pen when she wants to.

I'm glad she's doing much better also! Lola doesnt want to feed Lucky everytime he wants to nurse also. He's at a good weight and his weight gain was a full ounce each day! Now he's gaining about 1/4 oz up to 1/2 oz each day. There has been a few days that he's not gained anything at all for like 3 days straight. But I know he's getting plenty also!
I'd been letting Lola go now a few hours to the much bigger Xpen to be with the daddy and my little guy Cookie ,since the puppy is 1 month old tomorrow... She gets to play or relax and then I bring her back to be with her baby. She seems much happier to get some extra freedom now.
