Intro and breeding question Hi everyone! I am so happy that I found this site. I have 2 yorkies a girl and a boy and they are in the process of breeding right now. I was wondering what day of heat cycle is when she will be most fertile. I have read after she stops bleeding and I have read between 9-18 days so I am a bit confused. My girl is in her 18th day and my boy won't leave her alone, now he is obsessed wanting to mount her every second and she allows it at times and hides at others where he can't get to her. In 3 days she will be through with her heat. Is she even fertile now? I have yet to see them tie. And why is he going crazy?

It's a little late in the cycle, but she could still take. So you have seen him try but have not seen them tie? How old are they? How big are they? I assume that neither have mated before. You might need to assist them. I would separate them so he is not pestering her non stop. He is wearing himself out trying.

Sounds like you are putting the cart before the horse. Why would you want to breed a 10 month old puppy. You don't even know what he will look like full grown?

Thanks Jeaniek I will try that. If not this time then next. My plans are to breed them once and keep them in the family (family members) then I will have her spayed and him neutered. I don't plan to do this for a business. I appreciate all your advice and I am sure that I will have more questions in the future. Thank you!

It is not advisable to just leave a male and female together when the female is in heat. If the male did tie with her and you were not around the male could really get hurt. You should always separate the male from the female for 3 weeks and only allow him to be with the female during the breeding process. Yorkies need a lot of supervision during the breeding process. I always hold the female while the male mounts her. Another thing, your male is just 10 months old and still a puppy. He needs to mature more before using him for breeding. Also, like Tami (LadyHawk) said, breeding is a huge responsibility and it takes lots of research to do it correctly. There are many risks to momma and if something goes wrong with the whelping it can be very heartbreaking.

Thanks for all the wonderful feedback yorkie lovers! and for all the negative, well, they are your oppinion and it certainly doesn't define who i am as a person and how much I love my babies. But all the feedback was welcomed none the less. Now it's just wait and see. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Plus your male is too young yet, he is more keen than able or fertile at this age. Even if he was older, personally I would never use him for his first time with an inexperienced bitch. Breeding a litter can never be guaranteed to be straightforward, so many things can go wrong from mating to puppies ready to leave mum. | |
