Default Shunts in the lineage?

I have a question for anyone who might have knowledge on it. I was recently talking with a local breeder (25 years experience) who admitted that she had an incidence of liver shunt in one of her lines.

The question is...is this a red flag to avoid any puppies in that line..or is liver shunt an anomyly that could occur in any line?

Default Ls

It can happen in any line, but some are much more prone to it. There are breeders who swear they have never had it. It was many years before I got a liver shunt pup and it has been many years since the last one, but I am always wary of it and watch my pups.
All I can do is give guarantee to give the buyer their money back if it happens within the first year..and most show up before that time. I have yet to have one show up after 12 weeks.

I would not buy from a line with it unless a bile acid was done and they pup was at least 12 to 16 weeks..

Have you ever heard of CH. Rothby's Reputation? A good friend offered me one of his sons who was a year and healthy ($500..great deal)..nice show potential, but the brother in the litter died of a shunt..I declined. The male may never have produced a LS pups, but why chance it so close?

PS...I would buy a heathy pet, but not breeding stock I should say..

Thanks for the input Pat....and yes...I have heard of rothby ...I've always admired that line...at least what I've seen of the Champions. What a shame though...would have been a great addition...

I must say..I was at least impressed with this breeder for being honest! I'm a Village Idiot when it comes to knowing what to ask about. so I figured she must have some "heart"....she could have told me no...I don't have an inside track on the lines of these breeders. How soon can you do the bile test on pups? Does it show up that early? It just seems sad to me...you fall in love with the pup...buy it...take it home...then take it to the vet...and it fails the bile test? So then you have to take it BACK to the breeder for a replacement? Llike a lamp? Tragic.....I personally would be heartbroken..and then what happens to the pup?

We had German Shepherds growing up and one day...our family got a German Shepherd Pup for about $150...which was the going rate at the time (I date myself).. Well..three days after we brought it home, it was apparent that there was something terrible wrong with the pup. Its intestines were protruding out of his back end! Us kids were hysterical...and my Dad had to take him to the vet and have surgery on him. That put my Dad back almost $800...which back then..was a lot of money to spend on a dog...especially for someone like my Dad with a big family. Looking back...what a great guy my Dad was! (Of course it probably helped that all fourteen of us were sobbing...lol)
