| HOW and WHEN Do you Introduce a new Puppy to Older Dogs in your Home? I was wondering about this since yesterday.Lucky is only 8 days old and he is still with Lola in the whelping box. Lola now is now walking around a lot more in our masterbathroom .Before she wouldnt leave the whelping box and hold her pee for as long as possible so she wouldnt leave her baby. They have an Xpen around them. Well yesterday our 2 Yorkies were curious and walked in the bathroom and immediately saw the puppy and were sniffing all around the gate.Lola jumped out and started growling and barking like never before. Itotally understand this is her mother instinct to protect her baby. I'm just wondering at how many weeks should I introduce the puppy to our other 2 yorkies? Lola seems like she will deffinately want to fight the 2 yorkies to keep away from her baby. Is 6 weeks too soon to introduce the new puppy? Or should I wait until at least 8 weeks? I want the other yorkies to get used to the new addition to the family as I dont want this to be a total shock the day this new puppy starts walking around them lol... | There will be other's to answer you who are more experienced than me but when I had my litter the whelping box and x-pen was set up in our living room so the other dogs were around the pen from the beginning. They smelled the babies through the pen and my Molly never got very agitated. It wasn't much of a novelty to the others because they were right there all the time. I think we let them into the pen once we weaned them from Molly and everyone got along great. Good Luck and Congrats!!

| I was thinking to let them near the puppy when he was weaned also. I do have an X pen set up in our family room as well but I wouldn't be able to put the puppy and Lola there because that room is too cold since it's a huge open area (closing off the vent) would not work. I think I may let our 2 yorkies walk around the xpen where Lola andher baby is more often so they get used to the baby .I just want Lola to get used to the idea of allowing the others to sniff the puppy and not want to attack! lol Cookie(4yrs old) and Angel (1.5yrs old) only like to sniff and are curious they are not the type to want to fight ... | By 5 or 6 weeks Lola will probably be looking to give the little guy away!! The moms do lose interest in their pups around then (the weaning period). By then it shouldn't matter what temperature the room is that you have them in... you can move them to the family room then. I keep my house so cold (and I have 3 litters of pups at the moment)... my husband recently asked me if I was thinking about hanging meat around the house!!! ( I guess he was cold...) I just have a blanket over the side of the xpen nearest the vent in the sunroom. Good luck!!

| my 2 cents I never let my pups near any other dogs until they have had their first set of shots. That is 8 weeks of age. I also don't let the mothers outside either as to not bring in germs and give to the babies. Perhaps I am over cautious, but better safer than sorry. |
