Whelping pudding is a good source of usable calories and calcuim that is offered right during and after delivery. I generally make up a recipe using a modified version of one posted here and feed it daily for several days.

here is the one I use. very simple. One small box of vanillaa pudding and pie filling (the cooked kind), two c. milk, 2 egg yolks beaten and 1/4 c. sugar. cook slowly until thickened. Cool to room temp. it also helps their milk production. don't worry if she doesn't want the ice cream or pudding during whelping. none of my girls ever eat or drink during the actual whelping. i also have never had but one that vomited days before she whelped. They might do it right when they are ready. my girls also eat till right up to time. i am preparing for a major dog show this weekend but I will be online for a few more hours if you need me, pm me . There are enough of us lurking at this thread to help you.

The whelping pudding use is as follows:

1 can goats milk (plus 1 can water)
1/4 cup kayro syrup
1 small box of knox gealitin - all packets in the box
1 small carton of plain yougert with live cultures
2 egg yolks - optional, but the raw yolks are ok for dogs

Heat the water to boiling dissolve the gealitin - you might have to do some stirring. Add the rest of the ingredients and pour in a 8" x 8" pan (or larger). When the pudding jells, cut into blocks.

With this recipe you are feeding good nutritious foods plus sugar in a very easy metabolized format (kayro syrup).

I am sure that there are other good recipes out there that will serve the same purpsoe, but I have found this one works very well for me.

The whelping pudding use is as follows:

1 can goats milk (plus 1 can water) - if I had a good source of clean fresh goat's milk that would be my preference
1/4 cup kayro syrup
1 small box of knox gealitin - all packets in the box
1 small carton of plain yougert with live cultures
2 egg yolks - optional, but the raw yolks are ok for dogs

Just checking in. Our power went out yesterday due to a really severe storm, so I was afraid that I missed it all!! I hope all is well with Peyton.
