Cry Going back to Vet with Lola ,I can't take no more

Just when things look so much better something else goes wrong. Later this afternoon I notice how big Lola's bottom breasts/mammary glands look . I lift her leg and see the bottom 2 nipples and surrounding breast tissue looks hard and lumpy It looks darker than the rest of the mammary glands. The only way to describe it as cottage cheese lumps .I'm really afraid now she may have Mastitis I dont think my thermometer is correct. I took her temp and it says 101.7 . When I had taken her temp about 30 min before going to the Emergency Hospital it said it was really low like 98.2 . When I get there and they take her temp it was actually 100.5. I thought there was a mistake. The only thing Ive noticed different is that she looks to be breathing a bit faster when I watch her sleep and also when she is awake she often pants liek she is thirsty adn then stops
I have the Canine Reproduction and Whelping book by Myra Savant Harris and it has loads of info and this is one thing that was written about. I am feeding Lola by Syringe ,it's not totally because she is not hungry.I give her 1 syringe of food and then bring the bowl up to her and she eats it up but as long as I hold it under her chin to eat.She is eating and drinking at least and she also has the Post Whelp Pudding during the day. The puppy was around 3.7 oz when I got him weighed on a new scale. This evening it showed 4 oz after a feeding. So he is eating.

According to what I read they will put her on Antibiotics. She is already on Antibiotics since yesterday Clavamox. So it probably takes a few days to start working in the system. Putting a very warm wet washcloth against the two breasts will help you express some of the built up back and relieve the pressure. It said to first squeeze the nipple tosee if any milk comes out and it did NOT. That was a sign that I was suppose to look for .I then put the warm wet washcloth there for 10-15 minutes and then started to squeeze the nipples ....LOTS of milk shot out.If left alone the glands swell muchy more and they may even have to make a cut and drain it and by then it will be pus filled milk in the affected nipples. So folks here I am about to pull my hair out and breakdown but I CAN'T and WON'T. As I squeezed her bottom nipple she turned around and started licking the my hand as I squeezed. She closed her eyes like she was feeling relieved .
I am calling my Vet in the morning to have her check Lola. Maybe the antibiotics that she is on now may work but Lola needs to be checked to see if there 's anything else I could be doing for her. Also if it gets worse I will have to supplement the puppy until she is better to nurse.

Sorry for the long post,I just had to vent

OK take a deep breath...it is hard and especially when you go through a lot. With my last litter I think I acquired about 8 hours of sleep in 8 days and it can make you very emotional and makes the stress so much worse.

If it is just slightly harded the infection may not have started yet. I would watch it and if it gets firm continue to apply the warm compresses and express just enouhg milk to relieve the pressure. If you express too much it will just refill, but just removing enough to make it more comfortable will help it to dry up. If you think it is infected then I would take a small circular band-aid and place it over the nipple so the baby can not nurse from it. Monitor her temp and if it gets high them take her to emergency.

Just amoxicillian will treat mastitis so the Clavamox should more than treat it and may keep it from becoming a problem. I hope you have an unevenful night.

With a fever, even low grade, rapid breathing is normal, as it is with people. Its the bodies way of trying to cool itself, similar to panting.
Her temp may have been low before if she wasnt drinking a lot from not feeling well. If an animal or person is not feeling well, they tend to not feel thirsty. If you become dehydrated, your body has a hard time maintaining normal temperature. So even if she had been fevered before, if she became dehydrated, she could become hypothermic.
This happened with my daughter when she was on antibiotics. She had such severe diarrhea as a side effect, that she quickly dehydrated and her temp went down to 95 rectally. I rushed her to the er and she had to have IV fluids.
Be sure to push lots of fluids with her as much as possible, especially with her lactating.

I have been reading every update that you have posted and Lola is one lucky baby for having you. The concern that you show, makes me tear up. I know we all love our babies and I read alot of posts, and we can't read everyone of them, but yours caught my attention from the very beginning of this ordeal and I've never posted because know one really knows me yet on here. I'm still new, so I didn't want to comment, but I can't keep from telling you, that your a special woman for loosing sleep and worring as much as you have. You went with your gut feeling, knowing something wasn't right with her puppies and you saved her life, plus her only son too. I commend you on your love for your baby and I just wanted to say that before I went to bed tonight. I hope you get a good nights sleep(which you won't because your worried) and try to put her in Gods hands tonight. Good luck with your little boy and mommy and please continue to keep us posted on her progress. Like I said before, she is one very lucky mommy to have you.. Good night and Good luck and God Bless you....

Jackie that's what I was hoping also that the Clavamox wouldstart to work . I Only started Tuesday to give her the antibiotics ,it's for 7 days. I will apply the warm compress later today .I don't know how hard is too hard for the breast to feel .It's deffinately inflamed I will try and take some pics later today also. It's true I'm sleep deprived and my mind is not all there .My husband and kids told me that lastnight.
I will call the vet in the morning and let her know what's going on and that she's on antibiotics. If she wants me to bring her in I will just for a post op checkup and she will determine if she needs further treatment than I've been doing already.

mommaofmia: Thank you ,that was sweet of you .The weird thing is she's my daughter's dog who's now bonded with me while she was pregnant. She only wanted to be with me and I spoiled her way too much. She would often be in a shoulder carrier with me in the house.Just so she wouldnt cry if I left the room! lol I'm very bonded with her now .She's in my masterbathroom with her baby in anXpen. So she's only like 8 feet away from my bed and I can even hear the puppy when he cries. So I must not be in a deep sleep because he sounds like a little mouse!
I'm going to bed.The puppy already fed like 20 minutes ago and he will probably be upagain in 2 hrs andI like to peek just to make sure he found a nipple. he must know something is not right also because he's NEVER picked those two bottom nipples.

I will update everybody if I'm able to see the vet tomorrow hopefully.

If no infection has set in, it could be considered an engorged teat. This happened to one of my girls the day after whelping and it sent me straight to the emergency vet at midnight. In my girl's case, all that was recommended was to relieve the pressure on the teat by drawing some milk off. She was fine right afterward and the pups nursing prevented a recurrence. I think the thing to look for in mastitis is a pus type discharge from the teat or off-colored milk. Also, a high temp would indicate an infection. Good luck with Lola...you've been through a lot already.

Default Lola

I think this is all normal what you are experiencing with her nipples. She needed them expressed to relieve the pressure building up. This happens quite often. Its amazing how much comes out. If it gets hard again, just use the washcloth again and relieve it for her. With only one pup its not being drained down.

Default Back from the Vet

Well we're back from our vet.Lola is better today. The vet told me good job on the warm cloths and squeezing some milk out. The swelling is going down and the Clavamox should already be working. So I could put the puppy on those nipples to nurse and help. Her tempwas good at 101.5

I am happy to report that the puppy that we named Lucky is gaining weight.Tuesday's weight was 3.75 oz now up to 4.25 oz.I asked about the dewclaws and my vet said honestly to leave them. If later on when he gets neutered they would dewclaw them while he's getting neutered. She didnt want to stress the baby.
My husband met our vet for the first time today and now he knows why I like her so much. She is caring dog lover first.I go back in a few weeks to pickup a dewormer for puppy. The best part of our appt today? The vet said she wasn't going to charge us anything. She said just to take her home and take care of her.And to bring her back in a week to remove the stitches
She also gave me a home remedy for the swelling! She said to get Cabbage leaves and put them against her breast and wrap like a T-shirt material around her to keep the cabbage leaves there for a while and do that a few times a day.

I actually slept lastnight for almost 7 hrs! I woke up in the middle of the night to check on them and the puppy was already nursing when I got there I will clean her up a bit with a warm washcloth and take pictures of mom and baby later today.

Thanks to everyone and thanks that YT exists! I've been here for 4 yrs and the knowledge I've gained is amazing.Even though doubting myself several times ,I still knew what to look out for and I truly believe that it saved Lola's life andher puppy's.

Love Lola and Lucky

I am so glad today is looking better. Sounds like you had a good visit with your vet. You sound relieved, which makes us all relieved.. Try to get some rest today and try not to worry. Maybe now that Lola is feeling better, she will feel like bonding with her baby boy..

She has deffinately bonded with him and doesnt let him out of her site. It's difficult to weigh him soI have to put the scale on the floor right next to the whelp box and she still is jumping all over to get him back. He's always tucked under her front paw or by her neck. I promise to take pictures today.Today is my anniversary and we're spending it at home
