I have never experienced this, but have heard of them doing that and also sucking on each other's tails. I would take a child's sock and cut the top off and put it over their abdomen covering the it so they can't get to it. Of course you will have to take it off to potty them. Hope this helps. Let us know...

They are 16 days old. Mom has not been able to nurse for more than a week, so I am bottle feeding everyone on a regular basis. I like the sock idea, I will try that today to see if it helps. Does anyone know if this will hurt them, could this be why they had a serious case of diahrea? Some still are a little lose, but at least I am keeping them eating. I have had little sleep the last week, but that is whta we do isnt it!

Marlee,
Puppies that are hungry and need feeding will cry continuously, move their heads from side to side and suckle on each other and on objects in the nest box.
If you know they are full, Heres a site you can read about how to solve the problem ........Click Here

I know I am feeding them enough. They are being fed every 2 hours and eat nearly an ounce each. I would fear if I fed them more their little tummies would pop as they get huge.

I was using toddler socks, I am not completely dense. ) they still slipped off.

I am thinking they just do not feel like they are suckling enough, like on mom they would just hang there, now feeding time is over pretty quickly. I use a gerber newborn bottle, with premie nipples

They give some good ideas there. Sorry you are having such troubles, Marlee. Hopefully one of these ideas will help.

Puppies like to nurse themselves to sleep so all they are trying to do is soothe themselves. I have seen hand raised puppies do this before, they never got sick but would just make sure they do not make each other sore. I honestly would not worry about it too much. Putting something on the puppies will only make them more upset.

Get an old towel and cut it in to strips long enough to go around their tummies and have some extra length. Get some stick on velcro strips and attach them to each end. Should be able to get the towel strips to stay snug on them that way.

The diarrhea could be from the formula or from overeating. Are you bottle feeding or tube feeding?
