What Do You Look For in a Pedigree? Hi, I'm fairly new here and new to the Yorkie breed, too. I've been researching like crazy before my little girl comes home at the end of July/first of August. My first furbaby! YAY! I've been reading all of the threads here and I am quickly gaining an appreciation for what good breeders have to go through in order to bring us our beautiful little babies. So much work, time, money, and emotion goes into what you do. Thank you! I know that there is so much more that I can't truly appreciate yet just because of my lack of knowledge. Like the Pedigrees...I'm sure that it takes a lot of knowledge and research to choose the right lines to breed for beautiful, healthy babies and I would like to be able to understand this a little more. I was sent the father's pedigree, and I did research online so now I understand how to read it. But what does the information REALLY mean? Should it mean anything to me? Or is it really only for the breeder? What does it mean to me to know the names of all of the parents so many generations back? I am an artist and when my friends request items I always get appreciative smiles and enthusiastic thank you's...and that is really great! It feels good to put a smile on someone's face. But I know that most of those people don't truly understand what goes into those pieces...and that's OK...but it would be nice if they did know. And that's what I want for my breeder...to understand enough to honestly let her know how much I appreciate what she has done to bring my beautiful little girl to me. That's all. Thanks for taking the time to answer if you are able to. Carrie

Congratulations on getting your first Yorkie. I know you must be excited. It is good that you are doing your research. Pedigrees are helpful to let you know what champions might be in your dogs background. If your dog is from champion bloodlines then you can usually find information on those kennels that bred the champions. Usually you can find websites or books with photographs. You could also contact the breeders of those dogs and they might give you input on coat types, health problems and structural problems that might exist in their lines. If your puppy is not from show lines or the champions are more than 3 generations back then it really does not matter as much but it is nice to know. Just because a dog is not from champion lines does not necessarily mean it is a poor quality dog since some breeders are responsible breeders and breed for proper type and soundness but they just don't show. Also, just because a dog has a lot of champions that does not always mean it is of breeding quality. You first source of information should be the breeder you are getting her from. If she is a responsible breeder she should be able to give you lots of input on the parents and grandparents and even provide pictures. We will be looking forward to seeing pictures of your new baby. How old will she be when you get her?

Thanks so much for answering and its very nice to meet you! I did a little bit more research last night after I posted this and I found a great article about the three types of breeding...outcrossing, line breeding, and...now I forgot the other one. So, that made things a little clearer, too. The breeder gave me photos of the mom and the grandmother and the pedigree for the dad. I will ask her some more questions. I just know she's busy and I hate to bother her too much with dumb questions. My little girl will be 17 weeks when she comes home. I haven't named her yet...I want to see her personality first. I haven't been able to meet her in person, but my breeder sent me lots of photos and she will send me updates as she grows. I wish I could meet her in person but she is 26 hours away. She sounded VERY excited about this new pairing and she said that she didn't have any puppies from this dad yet so she would keep one. But...of course, I couldn't share in her excitement and it all went right over my head...LOL. Carrie

I know you are excited. How big do you expect your female to be when she is grown? Does the dad have many champions in his pedigree? You will learn so much information here on YT. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you are planning on breeding later, now is the time to start learning. I wish you the best of luck with your new baby.

She will be too small for breeding...only about 3 to 3.5 pounds. All of her brothers and sisters are 4-6 pound range...she just ended up tiny I guess. And, really, I just wanted a healthy, beautiful little companion. I don't have any intention of ever breeding. I've read enough here to know that I absolutely do not have the dedication it takes to do it. I'll leave that to the people who know what they are doing. Not to mention that I would never be able to give the babies up...LOL. I'm one of those people who will rescue a drowing ant if it gets stuck in a water drop...LOL. But I do love reading about what you do here and seeing all of the babies. Thank you so much for the information and the welcome. I may have more questions later...I'm off to do more reading. I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It is my understanding that the AKC registry started as a way for breeders to be able to study certain lines or pedigrees, and enable them to add a dog to their program that could enhance it. For example, if your own line lacked something in hair quality, you might want to add a dog from a line that was known for producing excellent coats thus enhancing your own line. Breeders didn't start out with outstanding specimens but gradually produced them by studying the lines. In the same way, you could learn which lines to avoid. For the average person, the pedigree doesn't give much information, it tells you the champions in the background, and give you a certain amount of "bragging rights." That's why I don't understand all these other registries that have popped up. I think they are intended to mislead the public into thinking their dog is somehow more valuable if he's "registered." I'm not sure if breeders from the alternative registries study the lines of the other dogs listed in order to improve their own lines, but just use it because their dog is not eligible for the AKC registry.
