| Xray or not... that is the question... Ok, SO I am working on my 3 rd litter, 2nd from Bridget, due in approx 13 days... I have always gotten the xrays done 10 days prior to expected whelp, however both of my last ones were off by one pup. Given this fact, and yes we did take multiple pictures, would you do it agian or just let her go, and find out how many are there as they are being born. I am asking only because as I have said I am 2 and 0 right now, should I give it another try???

| I think it is just a personal choice. I have never had any of my females x-rayed. I know one person that had her female x-rayed for two different litters and they were wrong both times. |

| x-ray X-rays are only as good as the person taking and reading them...I like to do one at 56 to 58 days..it gives me a clue...it may miss a puppy, but they have never missed one large one...it is the singletons that concern me...if you see 3, it is no big deal if 4 are born...but if I think 2 average size pups really is ONE big puppy, then I want to know...I have no luck with listening for heart beats...they all same the same to me. |

BANNED! | I always do an x-ray on day 55 to 57 if we are expecting a small litter. If I am expecting a larger litter of more then 3 then I skip the x-ray since it always seems to be incorrect atleast 90 % of the time. I do listen to the heart beats with my stethoscope often though. |

| Thanks for all the replies. From what I can tell visually and from just passing my hand over her I think we are expecting four, there are 4 definite different lumps 2 on each side. I am not palpitating... just literally running my hands over her like I am petting her. She is enormous though, I most likely will be taking her in in about a week for the xray, as I do not want to see one that is way to big. We are excited though, it is getting closer and closer. I get nervous each time and excited to see all the puppy faces. One more question, have you ever had a bitch that free whelped one time very well, and had issues the next. She is a decent size and did great last time, I just worry that things could change on a dime. Thanks in advance for the impute

| Yes, things can go wrong from whelping to the next. The one thing that happened most often is a puppy getting stuck sideways blocking the birth canal. This can happen when a puppy will leave one horn and start up the other horn. This has happened to me twice and both times it was the last puppy to be born that did it. I know another person that had it happen to them. The female had 2 pups, kept pushing for hours, she took her to the vet the next morning and one pup was stuck sideways in the birth canal. The vet was able to work the puppy out but it was dead and then the bitch delivered another live puppy. |

The technicians at our vet's clinic must be very good at it...in 5 years the x-ray has always been right on. They have helped us with larger pups and we knew then if there was any trouble...to bring her in right away instead of waiting the normal length. We also always have our x-rays done mid-morning and we do not give them their breakfast until after we get home!

| litter Since she free whelped the first time, odds are more in her favor to free whelp again..but nothing is written in stone...I have had free wheplings after a c-section and c-sections after a free whelping...one girl needed a section, then had 2 natural whelpings and then a section... |
