| First litter and scared to death! Hello everyone! i am new on here and my Yorkie is expecting for the first time. She is 7 years old and this was an accident. She breed with a chihuahua smaller than her. My husband and I just recently split up and she is now in an environment with no fenced in yard, and well you know how dogs are! She snuck out of the house while I went out on porch for 3 seconds. Anyway.....today is her 62nd day and all she is doing is sleeping. She will not eat her puppy food anymore but will eat anything else I let her have. She has ate today. I have always heard that small breeds usually have their litter early. I am just really concerned. I love my yorkie so much and don't want to see anything go wrong with her. I have taken her to the vet 3 different times already and she has a litter of 4 coming! With it being her 62nd day today, when should I expect her to start whelping? She has shown no signs of nesting and just really has been sleeping all day today. should I be concerned or just wait wait wait? Any advice would be wonderful! |

| Hi there, Good luck on your up comming whelp They little girls can be confusing at times, in the last few days, many have delivered without much notice at all. Have you been watching the temp. It will drop to low 97-98 before delivery. I will you well. How big is your girlie? Did the vet think she could do this on her own?

| Yes the vet said she should do fine. He measured their heads and her birth canal and said their was plenty of room. She is between 5 & 6 lbs normally, now she is weighing close to 8lbs. She is so big and miserable. Is it normal for them to sleep so much this close to due date? I have been taking her temp for over a week now, twice a day, and it is different everytime. It has already fallen to 98.7 once 2 days ago, and nothing. This morning it was 101.1? I am just confused! Nothing happening like I was told it would! I guess thats nature! |

| The temp doesn't always drop. Please don't count on that happening.

| The body's temp will drop 2-3 degree from normal before whelping. It always drops, but it is not always caught. The temp drops when progesterone levels drop...which must happen before she delivers. It is good to take the temperature 3 times a day, this way at the very least you will know if there is a problem and she has a fever. At this point I would never leave her alone, especially since you have never done this before. Some will eat the day they whelp, some won't. She may start digging (nesting) in her bedding, this usually becomes more frequent as the labor progresses. They can occasionally nest for up to a week before puppies arrive. Small breed dogs do not deliver early, all dogs have their puppies 63 days from the day they ovulated. So she can whelp anytime from now until a few days from now. Can you feel the puppies moving? Just make sure you always have a vet available. The waiting is the hardest part...wishing you lots of luck! I would highly recommend having her spayed once the puppies are weaned. Not just so she does not get pregnant again, but this is in the best interest of her health. With each heat cycle she is at risk for pyometra (pus filled uterus) which is life threatening.

| Thanks! I am definitely having her fixed after this! My ex never would let me fix her. And now I am by myself waiting on pups to arrive! I am getting excited, just worry about her! And yes I have been feeling the puppies moving a bunch for over a week, they are not as active now but still feel them. I took off work today until tues. and my mom watched her for me the past 2 days! I am definitely not leaving her alone!! Is it normal for her to be sleeping all day? |

| It is very normal for them to be tired...ours usually are very sleepy for a couple days before they arrive. The other thing you may see is her vomiting her food up or having some really sloopy stools...they tend to clean out before the big event.

| Day 64 Well it is Sadi's 64th day if I have calculated right and still no puppies. She has been heavily panting and pacing since about 7 last night. We have been up all night! How will I know when she starts pushing? worried!
