Can a breeder explain how the classify.. I've seen puppies separated into: Showdogs..Pet quality and others probably don't come to mind now. 1)...I have always been curious what a breeder sees in a puppy that she can distinguish these classifications? 2)...How is the price calculated? 3)..Why give partial breeding rights, full breeding or just able to participate in agility courses. 4)..At how many weeks can they tell what classification (for lack of a better word) the puppy will fall into. I just want to be educated, not start a heated discussion. Thanks.. Last edited by Ines3185lyorkie; 05-28-2008 at 07:12 AM.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I would be leary of anyone offering show quality puppies...if the puppy was under 6 months of age. I don't think it can really be known until a later age. Some pet only qualities are apparent earlier...such as having a overbite, underbite, sometimes a puppy is larger...those are just some things that come to mind. Someone breeding quality yorkies can certainly spot other things...we novices do not.

i think its kind of funny but I also have seen alot of adds where they are offering show puppies and pet quality and these "breeders" have NEVER even been to a show!!! Personally, I would never buy a "show potential" puppy from someone that does not show. How would they even know what a show potential is supposed to look like and what makes the 'breeder" think that their dogs can produce show quality? I would buy show potential from a well known exhibitor and I do exxpect to pay quite a bit more than a pet quality puppy. A pet quality puppy is just that: A PET. Not to be bred. That is briefly how I look at the difference in pet and show quality.

I definitely think yorkies should not be sold as show potential unless the breeder has proven themselves in the ring. I think pet quality should be bred with the same excellence and determination. In other words, I believe in striving for show quality regardless of classification.

I guess everyone has different interpretations of different terms. While I do show some I would never advertise any of my pups as show quality because I am still leaning myself, even though I think I have a good idea what traits a show quality dog should have. To me all Yorkies are pets, they are companion dogs and they all deserve to be loved and cherished whether they are just companion dogs or show dogs. To me, a show potential (possibility for development into a show dog) puppy is one that comes from champion bloodlines and who's parents or grandparents are champions. A show potential puppy might be 12 weeks to 6 months old and has no serious faults. To me a show prospect (likelihood for success as a show dog) would be the same as a show potential but is more mature, 8 or 9 month old or older and you pretty much know what you are getting. How is the price calculated? That is up to each individual breeder. Many yorkies are over priced. A lot of it depends on what area you live in and how reputable you are. The price depends also on the quality of the puppy. Even champion dogs produce puppies that are not up to standard so the breeder will price them cheaper than a show potential puppy. Why give partial breeding rights, full breeding or just able to participate in agility courses? Most reputable breeders will not give breeding rights because they want to protect their bloodline and not have it fall in the hands of novice or unreputable breeders.

I feel strongly about that too. You must show in order to sell a show prospect. IMO - A show prospect is just that - one you think/feel may make it in the show ring. Those are usually sold around 5 months and up, depending on the breeder and their experience. Show quality - means they are ready (usually 1 year and older) for the ring and should make it to their championship. Price - depends on the quality of the pup, its parents, pedigree, and how much you paid for the parents. I will never give full breeding rights, unless it is someone I really know well. It is so different now than it was years ago. One has to be so careful now. Sorry. You know you are on the right track when you have top show people wanting to use your stud or buy one of your own pups. I was so happy when Anabelle de la Cruz of Trail West asked to purchase one of my babies (back in the 80's). It was a great compliment. T. Last edited by topknot; 05-28-2008 at 01:24 PM.
