| Confused about Breeding Sophie is only 6 months old right now. I have a friend who has a male yorkie who is closing in on a year old. When Sophie is older, i would love to breed the two of them. I think having a puppy of sophie's would be the most amazing thing, really. but still, i think about the pain of child birth and wonder if it's selfish of me to want to breed her. How do you go about making that very important decision??

| anytime you breed, you are putting your pet at risk!!! I always have to think: Do I love my pet/companion more than I love the puppies she might produce and am I willing to risk her life just to have another puppy? If she is your lifetime pet/companion, I would never in a million years risk her life. |

| i think about it, but then i think how amazing it would be after i lose her to have one of her puppies. i recently lost my sheltie, she had given birth to a litter of 4 puppies (3 survived) about 5 months before her death. i had given all her puppies away to good homes, like every other time. When Grace died, i kicked myself for not keeping one of those puppies. so you're right, it's a tough call. i just can't wait forever, as i have an important spay or not spay decision in my head..

| I say spay, I could NEVER - EVER in a million years live with myself if I did something or didn't do something to prevent *bad* things from happening to mine |

| i guess after i have seen my shelties have 5 litters combined (none of which were planned) all come through so perfectly, it's hard for me to imagine my Sophie having problems during birth. Of course she's smaller than the shelties, but i guess i just don't want to think about the negative. chances are, when it comes down to it, i probably will spay her to avoid the incident of my sheltie impregnating her, but still..i know i will wonder "what if"..

no idea whether she will have another growth spurt. The male that i am interested in is small, probably 3 or 4 pounds. so, i'm totally undecided..

| If you are contemplating breeding her, I suggest you go through the different forums on YT. I have two girls; one is spayed, and the other will be spayed soon (she is 5 mos.). When I first got Lexie, I was asked all the time if I was going to breed her, get your money back. It went through my mind briefly, but as I kept reading on the Yorkie breed, there is so much to it and only the perfect candidates should be bred. So there was no question in my mind that she would be spayed. Now after going through the breeder forum and nursery forum, I am very confident I made the right decision. Best wishes in making your decision!

| If you are seriously contemplating breeding her, she should really be checked by a vet to make sure there are no health problems that she would pass on, and the same with the male. You should know about both the female and male lines and what problems them have had. There is lots of information on here about breeding, and many useful websites and books that could help you. You have a little time to do your research. If you do, you'll be comfortable with your decision and can move forward. Good luck.

| IMO, you have already answered your own question in regards to breeding her: You are considering doing it "because you want one of her puppies." And you are already questioning if it is "selfish" to want that. Seems like you already have an answer. Don't get me wrong, I think you are in company when it comes to wanting another dog just like your already perfect one, no shame in that. I think that you are wanting what many others do and understandably so. But that's what it comes down to...what you want vs what is in the best interest of your girl and the Yorkie breed itself. That is for you to decide, and you have plenty of time. I understand that it is tough sometimes to put aside what you desperately want, but may not be the best case scenario. Kudos to you for thinking about your concerns and weighing your options in advance. It seems like those who TRULY love their furbutts enough to do that these days are few and far between. I know that you will make the best choice for yourself and your girl when the time comes to decide. |
