| Strange behavior from my nonpg girl Diva is acting strange...she has taken 1 of the squeaky toys (a little purple bear) and thinks it is a live puppy!!! Don't really know how or why this started. This is 1 of hundreds of squeaky animal toys the girls have..this particular one was lost for a few days and I found it a few days ago. About 3 days ago, I noticed Diva going under my bed and scratching..I thought she just decided she wanted to sleep under there...then she started keeping this toy with her...sleeping on it, resting her head on it(using it as a pillow). I still thought nothing of it. Then yesterday, we were going for our morning walk and as soon as we got to the corner, Diva turned around and headed back for home...no interest in walking(as when she did when she had Duchess). Okay, I'm starting to get a little curious now. Later yesterday afternoon, I don't know what happened but her & Foxxy were in a fight..more serious than usual(now I'm assuming Foxxy went after the toy as they usually play tug of war with all the toys together and share with no problem). The rest of yesterday, she continued to carry the toy with her everywhere...sleeping with it, not letting it out of her sight.if she comes downstairs for something(food/water), she flies back upstairs to be with it immediately after..Then last night, I noticed her nipples were engorged and when I gently squeezed 1, there was milk coming out. I just took secretly took the toy away and put it up while she wasn't looking and now she is going crazy looking for it and crying. What should I do??? Should I give it back to her and hope this subsides and this goes away or do I get rid of it?? She had a heat in Feb and is not due for another until late July sometime. She is not in heat and her vulva is not swollen. What is this? She's obviously psyched her brain into thinking she has a baby and therefore her body is reacting to it but what do I do from here? Thanks There's always something new to learn!

| Thanks. I mean, I've heard of "false" pregnancy but I thought that's usually when they're in heat..she's not in heat....just strange.

| False pregnancy begans after heat and can last until the time they should have given birth. Poor thing... It appears it is her maternal instincts if not caused by heat. I don't think it would happen if she were spayed. |

| I would not take the toy away from her. It will cause extreme stress for her. |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Wow Yolanda...........poor Diva (or not I guess, as long as she's happy when she's got the toy). It does sound like a false pregnancy to me from all that I have read on it. When in February was she in heat? Mid...late??? Remember...start of heat, then fertile time (when she would get PG), add 63 or so days from that, and the time that she "adopted" the toy as a baby is not really that far off from when she would've been having a litter. In any case, I hope she's doing okay. I am curious as to how long the mothering instinct lasts in a false pregnancy? How long before she gives up the adopted toy??? Good luck and (((((hugs)))) to you and Diva.

| My mother's dog went thru this a few years ago. It is most likely her hormones and is a false pregnancy. I think it happens around 2-3 months after their last heat. Don't take the toy away from her, it could really upset her. She might also start to pant, shake, and cry. Do an internet seach on Pseudocyesis for more info. You should also take her to the vet. He will probably place her on hormones for now, but he will also likely suggest she be spayed. Good Luck

| My poodle did this back in jan, only her "baby" was a small stuffed snoopy toy... I called my vet & he said when they come in heat whether they breed or not those hormones are still there making them think they are pregnant, so they go through this about the time they would have had puppies had they been bred. He told me we needed to spay her or she would do this everytime, my vet said it was best to have her spayed after she got past this which I did. I know it's so pitiful for them, savannah stayed in a papasan chair w/hers for a week & a half.

| Capri had a false heat also. Everything was a go for a pregnancy, and then she had a sonogram and it showed no puppies. I think she overheard us talking about her not being PG, and she just quit all the pregnancy behaviors...HA. I'd certainly not take her "baby" away from her. Just be patient, she'll eventually get through this. Poor little girl. Best wishes.
