| Our Female is 5 months And Our Male will be 2 in Oct...... We just got our little female, Miley, last Sunday and now Dudley has been interested in her all of a sudden today. He has been on her back and she just runs away, she is only 5 months and hasn't had her monthly yet (that we know of). We do plan on letting her have a litter but she is too young now isn't she? Right now they are separated, she is in her pen. She is not potty trained, nor does she care, so I bought a doggie play yard for her to be in. Anyway, should I just keep them separated for awhile until he realizes she isn't interested yet? We are new at this. |

| This will probably be difficult because they do need to be separated while she is in heat. She is too young (18 months or 2nd heat is the earliest most breeders would breed a female...the bigger the dog, like Great Danes, the longer it takes them to mature and the longer you should wait to breed them). Is her "area" swollen? Any sign of discharge? Usually the heat lasts for 21 or so days and it is always best to keep them separated during this time. Even when you are ready to breed them, they will still need to be kept separate and they should be held during the ties so the female doesn't pull away and hurt the male.

Thanks for your reply. I will check her "area", she is napping now. Haven't seen any discharge yet. | |

| I would have him neutered and her spayed. Here is some information on breeding: Is Your Dog Breeding Quality? Know The Facts Before Breeding Your Dog, ICDCA Backyard Breeder vs Reputable Breeder |

| sometimes this play is just to establish the leader of the pack. Remember dogs are pack animals. Just watch for signs of her going into heat. MY female was 9 months old when we got the male who was 12 weeks old. at first she mothered him coddled him and snuggled. as he grew and tried to dominate her then she told him who was boss. the only thing had worried me about this behavior is sometimes she got a little aggressive and would nip and bit into his nose and drew blood a couple times from his nose. I would crate her and baby him. When I would let her out she would go back to playing. |

| Yorkies can come into heat at about 6 months, so this may be the first signs of it. The boys always know first! I'd keep them separated for sure.

| My Joe humps everything when he is excited. He also likes to show off when we have company. He was in the middle of showing off one day with Lola, and my grandmother was over. She says "oh, is she is season?" I cracked up because he does it every single time someone comes over.
