| Diva demands human food. What to do? Hi all. I posted for the first time here recently about my girl Diva. She is currently 39 days preg. with her first litter. Her little belly is growing so fast! Our vet palpatted her abdomen on her 30th day and said he felt 2 babies for sure, but of course there could be more. Anyway, since she was 5 lbs. at the time she was bred, I am feeding her 3 meals a day to make sure that she is getting the right nutrition. My breeder and vet said that is what they recommend. Pre-preg. she was spoiled and given little nibbles of whatever we were eating. She loves fruit, like bananas, grapefruit, and of course whatever meat we were eating. Anyway, lately instead of looking sweet and waiting for us to give her treats, she has started demanding them. She growls at me when I'm cooking and barks and growls at us when we are eating until she gets something. Sometimes she acts franctic to grab whatever we are offering her. I'm concerned that she really is not getting enough to eat from her 3 meals of kibbles. (Science diet) I am also trying to make sure that she does not get over weight since I know that can cause problems at delivery. I started giving her a little bit of nutrical once a day just to give her a little boost with this pregnancy. Anyway, do you think I should up her # of feedings, add something to her kibble, or just continue doing what I've been doing? |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Nothing wrong with giving her fruits and veggies. Do try to not give her table scraps. Those aren't that good for them. I would have also suggested giving a breeding female a better quality food. As for that snarkiness she is exhibiting I would not put up with that. I know she is pregnant and all that but if you let her get used to demanding and being snarky like that it will continue after. Yorkies are wonderful but they are very strong willed dogs and they will run the roost if your not careful. Good luck with her care and whelping.

| Thanks Beth What food do you suggest. Diva came to me on Science Diet. That is what my breeder feeds all of her dogs and the food my vet sells and recommends. What is the best food for a pregnant yorkie and do you think changing foods at this point is a bad idea? I want the best for my baby. Thats why I post here. Vets do not always know what's best. |

First I would change her diet "science diet" is junk IMHO you would be better served with a well balanced puppy food. Fruits and veggies are good for them just omit grapes or raisins and anything with seeds....two weeks before whelping add a bit of wet puppy food into her dry servings for added nutrician..and continuing feed this through weaning to the mom. good luck

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I don't suggest changing her food now because the last thing you need is a sick mommy. I personally feed Merricks. If you check the nutrition threads there is a chart that shows the top quality foods. Then the trick is to find the one in your area. I feed Merricks. Another good one is Chicken Soup, Wellness, Orijen. There are some others but I can't think of them off hand. I am not a fan of science diet and while I take recommendations from my vet I also take it with a grain of salt. Vets offices tend to get some incentives from companies for carrying their products. Can you believe my vet had recommended Eukanuba...lol. When you look for a food also look for something that doesn't have corn. Corn causes allergies.

| Thanks , I will definitely check the nutrition threads. Unfortunately we live in a very small town and have limited places to buy pet food (grocery stores or vet offices). The nearest town that has a Petsmart is an hour away. However, I do have a friend that runs a small pet supply store in town. She only carries bird and small mammal foods, but I'm sure I could get her to order for me whatever I need. The attitude problem with her is kind of funny. She is such a little stinker, but really thinks she runs things. I never have tolerate her demanding attitude before but something about her being pregnant is just making me so much more lenient with her. I feel like my daughter is pregnant. LOL. But I will be more serious about making her be nice. NOw I'm off to research the threads on nutrition!! |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | They are stinkers that wring your heart out...lol. I know you are feeling for her. That is great that you can get your friend to order the food. Maybe she might like carrying them and build a business there.

| yes of course you just mix the two for a couple days and do less science diet by day two and none by day 4 or so...its a gradual change and easy.
