Default New member with a pregnant dog!

Hi everyone!!

I've been reading and browsing through this site for a few days now and I am addicted :P

Well I have a 2 year old yorkie that is about 5 weeks pregnant. We took her to the vet on Sat and did an ultrasound and saw 3 puppies Her belly is getting so big already ( she is about 4 pounds). The thing is, she is being SO PICKY with her food! I don't know if she is being picky or nauseous. A couple of days ago she would eat canned food but now she wont even touch it! The only thing she will eat are some fruits, chicken and turkey...sometimes eggs. I don't know what to feed her, or if I should give her some calcium supplement because she is definitely not eating well. I tried everything! She definitely won't eat dry dog food (out of the question) and now she doesn't eat can food Can somebody please help me. Thank you so much.

oh and you guys are wonderful with great advices

You definitely want to give her a good quality puppy food. You can add a couple of teaspoons of cottage chees to it to make it taste better for her and give her a little extra calcium. 4 pounds is really tiny for a mom. Good luck with your babies

Hello and welcome to YT. Kind of sorry to hear your little four pounder is expecting. I do hope she doesn't have complications like most tiny ones do.
I wouldn't even bother with dog food at all. Just give her "real" food and she will be so much more healthy and so will the puppies.

Welcome to YT. Sometimes they will get picky early in their pregnancy and here lately I have been hearing of a lot of picky pregnant mommas. I have never had that problem. Since she is so little is important that she eats several meals a day. If her blood sugar is dropping then that could also cause the loss of appetite. The chicken and eggs are good for her. If you could grind up some of the dry food and mix the chicken or boiled eggs with it and add a little boiled sweet potato, steamed peas and carrots or broccoli to it and see if she will eat that. Give her a little Nutri-cal or corn syrup and water to keep her sugar level up. Best wishes for a safe delivery. Please keep us posted.

i had one that did this almost the entire pregnancy and it drove me crazy. She wouldn't eat anything I fixed for her. I made numerouss trips to the vet to get different foods they recommended. Finally, they told me that if I found something she would eat, no matter if it was people food to give it to her because at least she would be getting something. i was worried puppies wouldn't develop right or something. She finally started eating a few hand fed bites of chicken breast. Cooked plain so that's how we got thru and this went on for about a week after she whelped and finally she started eating again. Times like that are when you wonder why you even want to be a breeder. oh and I almost forgot, she was a wonderful first time mama.

Wow, you guys are great. Thank you all so much. I will definitely try all the different methods you guys suggested. Yeah she is small to be pregnant but it happened by mistake and the funny thing was she was going to get spayed real soon too. She is a happy dog and still running around I love her so much. The vet said to bring her in at the end of May so we can do an X-Ray and see how big her puppies are. He suggested that if they are small then she can have a natural birth or if they are too big for her then we will have to do a C-section I'm so worried. I will definitely keep you guys posted. Thanks again everyone.

ginger snaps might help with the nausea.... homeopathic doggy remedy books are available at the library.. i just checked one out for myself.. cottage cheese is a good idea too.. i also think fruit like oranges might appeal to her.. i would mix the fruit with the cottage cheese.. my dogs love the charlee bear snacks... i use royal canin and blue wolf dry food.. morning sickness is common in pregnancy. she will eat when she is hungry.. best wishes for a healthy mom and puppies

Thanks cesar49, I'll make sure to look into that book. Well my baby doesn't like cheddar cheese so I'm hoping she will eat cottage cheese! She didn't eat much today, maybe 5 pieces of chicken She use to eat canned carrots and tomatoes but not anymore. I'm stuck in a rut! I know she isn't eating well and it's because she is just so picky. Is it common for some pregnant dogs not to eat at all during pregnancy? Tinkerbell hasn't ate much in like 3 days including today. Gosh this is so stressing!! boohoo

It really can be stressing. Rainbow is a little over 4 lbs and we have been trying everything to get her to eat. I have found that I have to spoon feed her to get her to eat. lol
