Stud I was thinking about breading my Yorkie (Tyson) but I don't know where to start. I would mostly like to do it so I could get another one....that would be cool....cause I really want another yorkie. I'm from the Houston area but I don't know where to start to stud him out

Finding someone, anyone, who would take a chance on allowing their bitch to be used by an unknown for whatever reason, is not a responsible breeder. Knowing the ancestry on the female is extremely important BUT the size and health history of the male is of equal importance... There is not a single responsible breeder in the Balto-DC region that would agree to this arrangement. Let me use your female to make my male try to have puppies with her. And, oh, BTW. I know you are the one taking chances with YOUR dogs but I want pick of the litter. And if the litter is one and the mom has a c-section or dies from complications ,,,,too bad! We had a deal!!!

Wrong Impression After re-reading my post, I can see where I sound kinda goofy. I love my little Tyson Bailey. I have always wanted to breed yorkies, just so that I can give other people healthy dogs that they can love just like Tyson is for me. Since I don't have a female I didn't think it was bad to want to stud Tyson. I don't want to hurt any other dogs and I would be devastated if I was the cause of killing someone else’s dog. I just wanted some information on where to start.

| I think Rini was being sarcastic while pointing out the risks of breeding a bitch. Most breeders wouldnt agree to pick of the litter exchange for unproven stud service. Your little stud needs to bring something exciting to the table for a breeder to take notice as well have an strong pedigree. hope this helps

Starting The first step should be knowing the standard of the breed. Second take your dog to the vet- have him checked over for any physical defects- have him updated on all vaccinations. OK- you have read and studied the breed standard- you have been to the vet- does your dog have LP, does your dog have both testicles , does you dog have a good bite- these are some of the things you look at. You should compare your dog with the standard- how does he size up? You need to be critical and honest with your self evaluation? If all you can come up with is He is so cute and I just love him and his personality he may not be a candidate that should be used as a stud. I/M/O unless the animal has the genetic make up to contribute they should not be used- male or female. A wonderful personality but a bad topline means- to me- a pet home and no babies for you little one. Please understand that once you start using a male for breeding he may become a stud- who walks around the house lifting his leg on anything and everything. he no longer is mild mannerd -clark kent yorkie- he has become Superpenasuaris. The change in those hormones means a change in how he is kept in your home and can mean a big change in his manners. Contact some breeders- does not have to be yorkies- go and watch how they breed- and what techniques they use. It just isn't hello Mr. Yorkie and Ms. Yorkie get to it. Assistance is required to make sure that neither yorkie is hurt in the process or frightened for future use. Talk with other breeders about the contracts they use ask for a copy and read them and ask questions. Read books about breeding- you have to understand on what days you should breed the bitch and what to look for. How many times to breed the bitch. Testing that should be done on the bitch and verification of her vaccinatons. If the gal stays with you during the breeding process do you have a safe place to keep her. What if she gets sick or gets loose while in your care. You may have a bitch owner who knows less then you do. HMMM- you can have problems- you do not want to be the blind leading the blind. If the bitch owner has done none of her preperation- you could be breeding puppies that are carririers of some serious genetic problems. I was talking to a young lady on the forum about this topic- she was so kind to e-mail me and I had to just laugh. I was a bad girl cause I said that pedigrees are important- want to check for line breeding-inbreeding or out crossing. Stupid me- according to this little gal- a male and female who have the same mom and dad but are out of a different breeding are not brother and sister. I'm from the midwest and if this was human's we were talking about it would be incest. Never could make her understand the babies were still brother and sister. This is just a over the top item but it is what you will run into and you have to be able to handle and know what to do.
