| How long is a yorkies gestation? I spoke with a local reputable breeder yesterday and I explained to her that I was looking for a female yorkie. I also told her that I wanted to get a female that would be a match for my male 6lb yorkie, if we decide to breed in a few years. She asked me some questions regarding my intentions for breeding..(good sign) and told me that the female she had now doesn't sound like a good match b/c she was too small. She mentioned she had a female that was in heat and she expected her to be pregnant in a couple weeks (1-2wks). She already had a deposit on one female from her litter but was willing to accept a deposit from me as well. I am going to her house on Thursday to take a look at the dam/sire. My question is: is it common to take deposits on a pup that isnt conceived yet? How does a breeder know if their will be 2 females in a litter? What are the chances of her not conceiving? and how long is their gestation (gestation- is that what it is called for dogs)? [/COLOR] Thanks Tina |

| heat is 21 days 7 coming in 7 standing and 7 going out, gestation is average 61-63 days. youre about 90 days away if the gal is due in heat soon, then add the 10-12 weeks for raising the babies, your looking at December babies ready for their forever homes. There is no way she knows the sex and can determine how many females she will have. Taking deposits on future litters some breeders do it, some dont. I wont until at least 2-3 weeks after whelping, better to be safe than sorry! IMHO hope this helps

You can always put a deposit down, but remember this...you'll be second in line for a female and you might have to wait till she has her next litter to get a pup.

| Taking deposits I am a breeder (my Vet gets mad at me when I say this) and I will tell you I never take a deposit until two week of age. Then it is very minimal. Once the pups are eating on their own and have been seen by my vet I will take the rest of the deposit which is half of what the pup is being sold for. I do though have a waiting list that cost nothing and I use that for interested potential pet owners.(This also gives me time to check referrences on that person to pre-approve them. But as a breeder let me tell you what the woman is gambling on. First, if her dam takes (gets pregnant) Then on the size of the litter, the sexes of the pups, and if they all survive. Unless that is a bloodline you are looking for in specific look around for a female, maybe that is already born. I want you to think about the size of the female you are purchasing too. If your male is 6 pounds it would be in your best interest to find a 6 pound or larger female for him, unless you know that he throws small puppies. Otherwise you might have a c-section birth, and from experience those are no fun. Here is another suggestion, Stud you little man out for pick of the litter, now you have your girl at no cost to you. If you are considering on waiting for this woman to have this female for you, then why not wait for your own sired female? Good Luck in whatever you choose to do. Sue |

| aww thanks Tina for the sweet compliment. Be careful giving a deposit specially if its a girl youre waiting for, always remember the breeder will keep a promising gal either for show/breeding the buyer will always be second in line.

| I meet the yorkie parents today!!! Well today is the day that I meet the breeder and see the dam/sire...so I will tell you what I did today. Im still not sure about what I'm going to do everyone had great points, but I guess that it is going to be up to how I feel about the breeder. Is she dedicated to her yorkies? Is she shady? How she answers my questions? What her yorkies look like? What her house look like and where she keeps her pets/pups? And just use my common sense! I'm willing to wait for the right pup/breeder. That is my main concern...I don't want to go with the wrong breeder. I went to a breeder last weekend and OMG!!! The poor pups. First of all they (breeder) were stright up hicks and I'm from florida. As soon as I saw the yorkies I knew I was not interested. Then the more that the breeders talked the more I wanted to leave. The house was in the country with a lot of land and some farm animals. The dogs were kept outside in the florida heat and they were allowed on the enclosed porch. The woman then told me that she has to keep the pups in the barn (no ac) b/c their is a crane (bird) that keeps trying to eat them. then if that wasnt bad this little girl told my son to get away from the fence b/c it was electric and the breeder told us that they have lost a few yorkie pups from the fence...I guess that they work and when they get home it is too late and the pup is gone...I dont want to keep going b/c it is depressing! | Now I get to be the big downer..If your male is pet quality and you are not aware of the health history of his parentage going back quite a few generations, you could very well be producing pups with genetic problems. This also applies to whatever female you decide on. Also after you use him for stud, he will not be the same dog and will more than likely develop behaviors that might not be so attractive, like marking. He is on the large size for stud use, and the odds of him throwing larger pups that require c-section delivery is therefore higher. Breeding just for the sake of acquiring another pet is not a good idea. If you just want another york or two for pets, find a good breeder and buy them. Please report the nightmare backyard breeder you found asap. |

When I spend $500-1000 on anything I do not go into it blindly. When I first decided to get a yorkie it didnt take much research to find that yorkie's come with many potiential problems if they are not breed with love. With that said I have the complete line of baileys line and he was breed by the top yorkie breeder in lakeland. Laura Lombardo whom shows her dogs and is very picky as to who buyes them not to mention they all (with the exception of a couple breeders) come with limited registrations. So, my pups would not be AKC registered, but would still be of quality. Now, im getting as much information as possible about breeding so that I will not hurt my pups or POSSIBLE future puppys. My bailey is almost 6lbs so I know that I need to get a bigger yorkie. The breeder that i meet with today knew and has worked with Laura on breeding together. so I know since Laura trusts her, I can too. I can't tell you how much respect I have for breeders that are dedicating their sleep and energy into providing these lovable pets for yorkie lovers like me and many others...my hat goes off to them! -------------------------------------------------------------- Ohh! and I will be the proud mother in December of a beautiful little girl...I cant think of a good name that goes with bailey. any suggestions? | |
